Star India javelin thrower Sachin Yadav's 2026 season was supposed to be the year he established himself among the world's elite. Instead, it has turned into a story of pain, uncertainty and missed opportunities.
Multiple sources informed myKhel, the World Championships 2025 finalist is set to miss the Commonwealth Games after suffering an elbow injury that has troubled him since the Indian Athletics Series-3, held in New Delhi in April.
The injury reportedly worsened after his Diamond League debut in Rome, and he is expected to undergo an MRI scan soon.
His participation at the upcoming Inter-State Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar also remains doubtful. The timing could not have been worse.
The Inter-State Championships will serve as the
qualification event for the 2026 Asian Games, while the Indian Athletics Series-9 in Ludhiana was the final opportunity for Indian javelin throwers to achieve the Commonwealth Games qualification mark of 82.61m.
No Indian has crossed that mark so far this season, and Sachin is now set to miss that crucial event. Just months ago, Sachin was one of India's brightest athletics stories.
The 26-year-old athlete from Uttar Pradesh won silver at the Asian Championships in Gumi and produced a historic fourth-place finish at the World Championships in Tokyo with a personal best of 86.27m, finishing ahead of former Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra. But 2026 has been far from ideal.
He opened his season with 81.95m at the Indian Athletics Series-3, finished fifth at the Federation Cup with 79.07m, and recently placed eighth on his Diamond League debut in Rome with a best throw of 79.18m.
For an athlete who touched extraordinary heights last year, this season has been a harsh reminder that sport can change in an instant. Yet, if Sachin's journey has shown anything, it is that setbacks do not define champions. The next chapter of his story may well be his most important one.
