Zverev beaten in Rome after wasting four match points and suffering third-set bagel versus Darderi

Alexander Zverev squandered four match points before a spectacular third-set collapse saw him beaten 1-6 7-6 (12-10) 6-0 by home favourite Luciano Darderi at the Italian Open.

Zverev, a two-time champion at the Foro Italico, was halfway to the quarter-finals when he raced through the opening set in a mere 29 minutes.

After the players exchanged breaks early in the second set, Zverev moved into a 5-3 lead and was on course for a routine victory, only for Darderi to fight back in stunning fashion.

Roared on by a vocal crowd, the 18th seed broke Zverev's serve and then survived a tense service game of his own to take the second set to a tie-break - which proved to be the turning point in a wild contest.

The second seed carved out four opportunities

to win it in two sets, but Darderi saved the first two of those on serve, and the third - on Zverev's serve - saw the German swing a wild forehand wide to the right.

Some excellent work at the net saw Darderi stave off another match point, and when Zverev double-faulted to hand the set to the Italian, the momentum switched completely.

Darderi matched Zverev's power throughout an astonishing third set, also moving well and applying constant pressure to his opponent's usually reliable serve.

Zverev was unable to get a game on the board and was barely bothering to return Darderi's serves by game six, and the home hope celebrated wildly with his box after finishing the job.

Darderi will now face 2026 breakout star Rafael Jodar in the quarter-finals, with the victor going on to face Casper Ruud or Karen Khachanov in the semis.

Ruud cruised to a 6-3 6-1 victory over Lorenzo Musetti earlier on Tuesday, reaching his 16th ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final - the last five of which have come on clay.

Italian Open: Darderi's big break

Darderi is into his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final, becoming the first Italian to achieve that feat in Rome since Andrea Gaudenzi in 1994.

Zverev was looking to reach six successive quarter-finals at ATP Masters 1000 events for the first time, as well as joining Jannik Sinner in reaching that stage at the first five such events of 2026.

But he fell well short in the final set, and three of the last four Italians to claim ATP top-five wins in Rome have now achieved the feat against Zverev (also Matteo Berrettini in 2019 and Musetti in 2025).
