Chelsea's star playmaker Cole Palmer has been dealt another injury blow in what has been a frustrating, injury-plagued season for the 23-year-old England international. Manager Liam Rosenior confirmed
on Wednesday that Palmer is sidelined with a minor thigh strain, forcing him to miss the Blues' 3-2 Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg defeat to Arsenal.
The setback comes as the latest in a series of issues for Palmer, who has already battled a persistent groin problem and a broken toe earlier in the campaign. Despite shining in Chelsea's Club World Cup triumph over the summer, his current term has seen limited appearances, with spells on the sidelines disrupting his rhythm and form.
Rosenior, in his early days at the helm, adopted a cautious approach to Palmer's recovery. Speaking post-match, the head coach emphasized the need for prudence amid a congested fixture list. "He has a minor strain in his thigh," Rosenior explained.
"If you play someone with a minor strain in January, it can turn into six weeks. I can't afford to lose Cole Palmer for six weeks because he's that good," he added.
The decision to rest Palmer was precautionary, with his fitness now under close monitoring ahead of Chelsea's crucial Premier League clash at home to Brentford on Saturday. Palmer returned to training on Thursday, offering hope for a swift return, though Rosenior remains wary of rushing him back.
Chelsea's medical team has been heavily involved, balancing short-term needs against long-term availability in a packed January schedule that includes Premier League and Champions League commitments. The thigh issue adds to broader squad concerns, including minor injuries to Reece James and illness affecting other players.
Palmer's importance to Chelsea cannot be overstated-he remains the creative heartbeat of the side. Fans will hope this "minor" strain proves just that, allowing the talisman to regain his lethal form soon.
