In one of the most iconic moments in Cape Verdean sporting history, Kevin Pina delivered a thunderous long-range strike to score his nation's first-ever goal at the FIFA World Cup against Uruguay.
The 29-year-old defensive midfielder has emerged as the heartbeat of the Blue Sharks, leading them on an extraordinary journey from the Atlantic archipelago to football's greatest stage.
Kevin Pina scored an absolute stunner. A free kick from 30 yards was met superbly and quite astonishingly, it found the back of the net as Cabo Verde created history with their first ever goal at the biggest stage of football.
Kevin Pina: From Praia to Professional Football
Born on 27 January 1997 in Praia, Cape Verde, Pina began his football journey with local club Tchadense. As a teenager, he moved to Portugal in pursuit
of greater opportunities. His senior debut came in January 2018 with Oliveirense in the LigaPro.
Early career challenges included loans to Anadia and Sertanense, where he continued to develop. A move to GD Chaves saw him progress through the B team to the senior squad, earning promotion and valuable experience in both the second division and Primeira Liga.
Rise at Krasnodar
In September 2022, Pina transferred to Russian Premier League side FC Krasnodar for €1.2 million. He quickly established himself as a key midfielder, making over 100 appearances and earning a contract extension until 2027. Renowned for his tactical intelligence, tireless work rate, ambidextrous passing, and powerful long-range shooting, he has become a cornerstone of the team.
Pina made his senior debut for Cabo Verde in March 2022. He has since earned more than 30 caps and scored several important goals, including a crucial strike at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations that helped secure a knockout-stage berth.
At the 2026 World Cup, Pina anchored the midfield during Cabo Verde's memorable debut, a hard-fought 0-0 draw against European champions Spain. His composure and defensive leadership were instrumental in maintaining the historic clean sheet. And now he has etched his name in history with a stunning goal.
