Italy's historic debut at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup took a dramatic and unfortunate turn when captain Wayne Madsen dislocated his left shoulder during their opening Group C match against Scotland at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
The incident happened early in the fourth over of Scotland's innings. Fielding at midwicket, Madsen dived to his left in an attempt to stop a powerful pull shot from opener George Munsey. He landed awkwardly on the adjacent practice pitches, rolling over in pain and immediately clutching his left shoulder.
Medical staff rushed to the field, and he left with his arm supported in a makeshift sling fashioned from a towel. He was taken for on-site X-rays, which confirmed the dislocation, ruling him out for the rest of the match.
Vice-captain Harry Manenti took over leadership duties as Italy struggled in the field.

At 42, Madsen is Italy's most experienced player and a key figure in their rise to World Cup qualification. The South African-born all-rounder, who qualifies for Italy through Italian descent, has a remarkable background: he represented South Africa in the 2006 Hockey World Cup before building a prolific cricket career, including over 17,000 first-class runs and more than 220 T20 matches, largely with Derbyshire in English county cricket. Appointed Italy captain recently, he embodied the team's ambition to compete strongly rather than merely participate.The injury occurred as Scotland posted a formidable 207-4, powered by Munsey's aggressive knock. Italy's chase faltered without their captain's batting contribution, ending in a heavy defeat. This setback is particularly cruel for the Azzurri in their maiden tournament appearance.
Recovery from a shoulder dislocation typically ranges from 7 to 21 days for standard cases, though more severe instances involving ligament damage or instability can extend to three or four months. Madsen faces further medical assessments within the next 24 hours to evaluate any additional issues and determine the full extent. His availability for upcoming group matches against Nepal, England, and West Indies remains uncertain, with some reports suggesting it could sideline him for much or all of the tournament.
