New Delhi, June 6: Indian cricket witnessed a major leadership shift on Friday as Shreyas Iyer was appointed captain of the national T20I side, replacing Suryakumar Yadav despite the latter leading India to their third ICC Men's T20 World Cup title just a few months ago.
While 15-year-old IPL 2026 sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been rewarded with a place in the national T20 squad that is set to be used across the upcoming tours of Ireland and England as well as the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
The decision marks one of the most surprising captaincy calls in recent Indian cricket history, especially considering Suryakumar's successful tenure at the helm and India's triumph at the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Iyer, meanwhile, returns to the T20I setup after
nearly three years away from the format, having last represented India in a T20 International in 2023.
The newly announced squad will be used for India's upcoming T20 tours of Ireland and England and is also expected to form the core of the side for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
A Stunning Captaincy Call
Few would have predicted Suryakumar Yadav's removal after delivering what every captain is judged on - an ICC trophy.
The Mumbai batter took over leadership responsibilities during India's transition phase following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from T20 internationals. Under his leadership, India continued their aggressive brand of cricket and ultimately lifted the T20 World Cup earlier this year.
However, selectors have now opted for a fresh direction, handing the leadership reins to Iyer.
The move could indicate a broader restructuring of India's white-ball plans ahead of the next T20 World Cup cycle, with selectors possibly looking for greater overlap between leadership groups across formats.
Remarkable Return for Iyer
The appointment completes a remarkable comeback story for Iyer. After battling injuries and falling out of favour in certain formats, the Mumbai batter has rebuilt his standing through consistent performances in domestic cricket, ODIs and the IPL.
His IPL 2026 campaign played a significant role in his return to prominence. Leading Punjab Kings, Iyer amassed 498 runs at an average of 55.33 while once again showcasing his calm leadership credentials.
Yet the most remarkable aspect of his appointment remains the fact that he has not played a T20 International since 2023.
It is extremely rare in modern cricket for a player to return after such a long absence and immediately be entrusted with the captaincy of the national side.
Selectors Reward IPL Performers
The squad also reflects the growing influence of IPL performances on national selection. Teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has received his maiden India call-up after producing one of the greatest IPL seasons ever by an Indian batter.
The 15-year-old finished IPL 2026 with 776 runs in 16 matches, winning the Orange Cap while striking at over 237.
Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana have also retained the faith of the selectors after impressive campaigns.
Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan provide dual wicketkeeping options, while Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Varun Chakravarthy offer versatility in the spin department.
England Tour Could Reveal Long-Term Plans
While the Asian Games remain an important objective, the England T20 series may provide the clearest indication of India's future direction.
With Suryakumar no longer captain and several established T20 regulars absent, the management appears to be constructing a new leadership and playing core around Iyer, Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy and other emerging stars.
Whether the decision proves successful will only become clear over time, but one thing is certain - Indian cricket's T20 landscape has undergone a significant transformation.
And at the centre of that transformation stands Shreyas Iyer, a player who has gone from being absent from the format for three years to becoming India's newest T20I captain.
