Borussia Dortmund kept pressure on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich with a controlled 3-0 win at Union Berlin, cutting the gap to eight points. The result came hours after Bayern’s first league loss of the season, against Augsburg, and strengthened Dortmund’s position in the title chase.
Dortmund struck first after 10 minutes at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei. Serhou Guirassy drew a foul from goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow, and Emre Can converted from the spot with a low finish. Later, Jobe Bellingham set up Maximilian Beier, who drove a third goal inside the far corner.
Union Berlin briefly threatened a response following Can’s opener. Andrej Ilic headed a good chance wide from close range. Fabio Silva then went close for Dortmund, flashing a shot
just past the upright. Dortmund’s composure in possession gradually reduced Union’s attacking moments as the first half progressed.
Niko Kovac’s side doubled the advantage nine minutes after the restart. Julian Ryerson delivered a deep corner, which Nico Schlotterbeck attacked forcefully. Ronnow reached the header but could only divert the ball into the roof of the net. Guirassy later missed a major opportunity, volleying over from inside the six-yard box.
Can’s penalty also extended a strong personal run. The midfielder now has 12 successful Bundesliga penalties from 12 attempts. Only Harry Kane (20), Hans-Joachim Abel (16) and Ludwig Nolden (15) have longer perfect streaks. Union have conceded four penalties in the league this season, with only Stuttgart allowing more, on five.
| Player / Team | Statistic | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Emre Can | Bundesliga penalties scored without miss | 12 |

Dortmund’s record against Union also improved. Dortmund have now taken six wins from their last seven league meetings with Union. Union’s defeat was only the second in eight Bundesliga home matches. Expected goals data showed Union on 1.24 from 10 shots, compared with Dortmund’s 1.89 from 15 attempts.

The outcome keeps Borussia Dortmund firmly in touch with Bayern Munich after Augsburg’s win tightened the title race. Clinical finishing from Can, Schlotterbeck and Beier, plus organised defending, brought three points. Union’s missed chances and penalty issues again proved costly in a fixture Dortmund continue to handle well.
