Bruno Fernandes has disclosed that Manchester United was open to his departure during the last transfer window when Al-Hilal from Saudi Arabia showed interest. The club reportedly received a substantial offer of around 100 million for their captain, but Fernandes turned it down. His contract with United extends until 2027, with an option for another year, and he has stated he will not discuss his future until after the 2026 World Cup.
Since joining Manchester United in January 2020, Fernandes has made a significant impact. He has played in 307 matches across all competitions, scoring 103 goals and providing 90 assists. Despite the lucrative offer from Al-Hilal, Fernandes chose to remain at Old Trafford after discussions with Ruben Amorim. However,
he admitted feeling that the club was inclined to let him go.
Fernandes expressed his feelings about the situation, stating, "I could have left in this transfer window; I would have earned much more money. " He mentioned that staying was not just for family reasons but also because of his genuine affection for the club. He added that it seemed like the club's stance was, "If you go, it's not so bad for us," which saddened him.
The Portuguese midfielder emphasized his dedication to Manchester United, saying he always gives his best and is always available. He clarified that financial gain was not his primary concern, even though the financial difference between playing in Saudi Arabia and England is significant.
Fernandes noted that if he ever decides to play in Saudi Arabia, it would be for lifestyle changes rather than money. He mentioned that living in a sunnier climate would benefit his children after enduring six years of Manchester's cold and rain. Additionally, he acknowledged the growing appeal of the Saudi league.
Despite these considerations, Fernandes felt that Manchester United valued money over loyalty at times. He conveyed to the directors that they lacked courage in making decisions because the manager wanted him to stay. However, if he had expressed a desire to leave, even with managerial support, the club would have allowed it.
On-Field Performance
This season in the Premier League, only Erling Haaland has been involved in more goals than Fernandes. With five goals and seven assists so far, Fernandes continues to be a key player for United. In a recent match against Bournemouth on Monday, he assisted Casemiro's goal before scoring a remarkable free-kick himself.
Fernandes' performance marked consecutive games where he both scored and assisted—a feat he last achieved in December 2020. His contributions on the field highlight his importance to Manchester United despite off-field uncertainties regarding his future.
