Nottingham Forest earned a vital point in the battle against relegation as Elliot Anderson hit an 88th-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United at the City Ground, leaving Forest close to Premier League safety while Newcastle’s push for European qualification suffered another setback.
Anderson, who came through Newcastle’s academy without scoring a senior goal, struck against the former club for the first time. The midfielder collected James McAtee’s pass and drove a fierce effort across Nick Pope from a tight angle, then took a knock yet stayed on to complete seven minutes of added time.
Newcastle believed the match was theirs on 74 minutes. Jacob Ramsey threaded a precise throughball into fellow substitute Harvey Barnes, who calmly
lifted a clipped finish over Matz Sels. That goal seemed decisive, yet Newcastle’s late-game issues resurfaced as Forest responded through Anderson near the end.

Forest had actually made a slow start. Head coach Vitor Pereira rotated heavily after the Europa League exit to Aston Villa on Thursday, while Morgan Gibbs-White remained unavailable through injury. Newcastle struggled to capitalise, though, as Sels spread himself well to block William Osula’s powerful first-half drive in the clearest early opening.
The tempo increased after half-time, with Newcastle finding more space. Bruno Guimaraes tried three efforts from distance, one flying off target and two beaten away by Sels. Forest stayed dangerous on set pieces, and Osula’s whipped free-kick cannoned off the crossbar, warning Newcastle before the late exchange of goals.
Eddie Howe’s concerns over Newcastle’s game management deepened. The team have now dropped 27 points from winning positions in this Premier League season. The club have only lost more points from leads once, when they surrendered 31 across the 2004-05 campaign, underlining a persistent problem in closing out matches.
The identity of Forest’s scorer added further irritation for Newcastle. Anderson had failed to score in 55 appearances across all competitions for Newcastle before this game. On the numbers, Newcastle took 16 shots to Forest’s 17 yet led the expected goals metric 1.55 to 1.19, with Sels producing five important saves.
Forest’s late equaliser keeps survival almost within reach. Forest will be mathematically safe if West Ham lose against Arsenal later on Sunday, while Newcastle are now certain to miss the Premier League top seven. Even finishing eighth, which could still bring European football, appears highly unlikely after dropping more points at the City Ground.
