The possibility of expanding South Africa's premier T20 league, SA20, remains a topic of growing interest, but any major changes are unlikely in the near future. League commissioner Graeme Smith has made it clear that while expansion is part of the long-term vision, the tournament will continue with its current six-team format for the next few seasons.
Since its launch in 2023, SA20 has quickly evolved into one of the most popular sporting competitions in South Africa. Over four seasons, the league has provided a strong platform for young domestic talents and established stars, helping it compete with the world's leading franchise tournaments.
Although organisers are still analysing broadcast and commercial data from the recently concluded 2026
edition, Smith expressed confidence that the league is on an upward trajectory.
Despite rising interest from investors and regions eager to host teams, structural changes are constrained by existing agreements with franchise owners, many of whom are linked to Indian Premier League (IPL) entities. As a result, expanding the league beyond six teams is unlikely before the 2028 season.
Explaining the situation, Smith told MyKhel during a SA20 media interaction: "We won't expand for another year. Obviously, I'm not entirely sure when we will, but we do get approached quite often. There are a lot of people who want us to expand because other regions in South Africa want to experience Betway SA20. "
He also highlighted that expansion is not a simple decision and involves multiple considerations. "I think there are several factors that need to be discussed before any expansion happens. But we won't expand for five years-that's the commitment we made to the six franchises owned by the IPL teams when we started," Smith said.
While interest from potential investors continues to grow, Smith suggested that expansion discussions will be gradual and strategic rather than immediate. "So, it's not going to be a major issue for potential investors, but it will certainly be part of future discussions. During the offseason, we'll sit down with our shareholders and talk about it in detail. "
For now, SA20's priority is to consolidate its success and strengthen its existing structure. Expansion may be inevitable in the future, but fans should not expect new teams in the 2026 season, with the league opting for stability before taking its next big step.
