Guillermo 'Memo' Ochoa's illustrious career, spanning over two decades, may not always be placed in the same "GOAT" conversation as icons like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. However, the Mexican goalkeeper's long voyage with El Tri can see him break a significant milestone at the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 in the USA.

The former Mexican captain recently announced that he would step away from the national team spotlight following the conclusion of the tournament. However, the 40-year-old has not yet been officially part of the squad selected by head coach Javier Aguirre. But here is the catch!

The Mexican head coach announced a preliminary list recently, which contained the names of the players who are currently playing in the Liga MX, the Mexican league.

In the goalkeeping spot, a spot was left vacant specifically for those who are based out of the country. Ochoa, who is playing his football with AEL Limassol in Cyprus, is expected to fill that spot, having made over 150 appearances for the national team.

Sixth Appearance For Ochoa

If Ochoa does manage to find his name in the list, serving as the backup to Rangel, he will become the first goalkeeper to make a record Sixth World Cup appearance. The only two footballers who are on that list are Lionel Messi and Ronaldo, playing from Argentina and Portugal, respectively.

Currently, the two goalkeepers who have been confirmed by Aguirre are Raúl Rangel of Chivas de Guadalajara and Carlos Acevedo of Santos Laguna. The squad is expected to have a third goalkeeper, and the most likely candidates for that position are Ochoa and Alex Padilla. In between the two, Ochoa has the advantage of having experience as well as having game time under his belt. The former Mexican captain has started for his club AEL Limassol on 22 occasions and kept a 23% clean sheet.

Guillermo Ochoa's Illustrious Football Career

Rising through the youth system of Club America, Ocho has been playing with El Tri since 2005. He was in the starting lineup in three out of five WC appearances, with his performances at the FIFA WC 2014 in Brazil standing out as his finest performances.

In addition to playing for Club America and San Luis, Ochoa has also tasted the European waters, plying his trade for several clubs in the past, including Ajaccio (France), Malaga & Granada (Spain), Standard Liege (Belgium), Salernitana (Italy), AVS (Portugal), before joining Limassol (Cyprus).

Although not at the prime of his powers, 'El Vasco' Aguirre knows very well that Ochoa will act as a mentor for the young talents like Rangel and Laguna. The 40-year-old played a similar role during the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, winning the title for a record sixth time. In addition to this, Ochoa also played for two editions of the FIFA Confederations Cup and two editions of the Copa America.

For a football player with such an illustrious career, both in the domestic and international circuit, the thought of retirement can be a little overwhelming, and Ochoa is no different. In a recent interview with TUDN TV network, Memo, as he is fondly called, said that a step away from the national scene is for sure, and a full retirement 'could also be on the cards. '

"Retiring is undoubtedly difficult, but in my case, it won't be so hard because I've enjoyed it for so many years, for so long," Ochoa said. "There comes a point when your mind and body say, 'You've given it your all,' and you leave peacefully, and that's going to be my case," he further added.

Mexico will play its first game of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on 12th June against a familiar opponent, South Africa. The last time El Tri opened their account against Bafana Bafana was with a 1-1 draw. But this time the match will be taking place at the home stadium of Mexico, the Azteca Stadium.
