Former India captain Rohit Sharma stands ready to bolster the side for their first two matches, as confirmed by an MCA source to PTI late Thursday night.
However, T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav, Yashasvi
Jaiswal, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shivam Dube will sit out the initial clashes.
"Rohit will be available for the first two games," a MCA source was quoted as saying by PTI on Friday.
Jaiswal is set to miss out as he has been recovering from a gastritis issue. On the other hand, Rahane and Dube are expected to join the team after a couple of matches.
Earlier, MCA chief selector Sanjay Patil addressed a potential communication gap with MCA officials when asked about Rohit earlier in the day, saying, "Yashasvi is undergoing treatment for a stomach issue and he should be alright soon. We thought that the youngsters should be given a chance. But whenever they will be available, they will be accommodated. But for the first two matches we are experimenting with youngsters. "
Rohit is set to feature for the first two matches for Mumbai, whose campaign in the Vijay Hazare Trophy elite division kicks off on December 24 against Sikkim in Group C, which also features Punjab, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Goa, and Himachal Pradesh. The 50-over event runs from December 24 to January 8 across Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Jaipur, and Bengaluru, with knockouts at Bengaluru's Centre of Excellence from January 12-18.
Rohit Sharma's confirmation for Vijay Hazare comes after Virat Kohli confirmed his availability for the domestic tournament as well. India's Test vice-captain Rishabh Pant takes the helm for Delhi, with Virat Kohli earmarked for a few games in the National One-Day Championship edition of the tournament.
