Middlesbrough have appointed Kim Hellberg as their new head coach, succeeding Rob Edwards. Edwards departed after a brief five-month stint, overseeing 14 Championship matches. Hellberg transitions from
Swedish club Hammarby, where he had a year left on his contract. Middlesbrough have not disclosed the duration of Hellberg's contract, but he will officially assume his role later this week. Interim manager Adi Viveash will lead the team against Coventry City on Tuesday.
Hellberg's tenure at Hammarby was marked by success, guiding the team to two consecutive runner-up finishes in the Swedish Allsvenskan. His record includes 35 wins out of 60 league games, with 11 draws and 14 losses, achieving an average of 1.9 points per game and a win rate of 58.3%. Middlesbrough are currently positioned second in the Championship standings, trailing leaders Coventry by seven points after losing only two of their first 16 matches.
Expressing enthusiasm about his new role, Hellberg shared his thoughts on the club's website: "I'm delighted to have been appointed as Boro's head coach, and I'm very proud to be here. " He emphasised that Middlesbrough's playing style aligns with his own philosophy. "A lot of things make Boro the perfect choice for me. The way they play and want to play, together with the crowd, suits me and how I want to work," he said.
Hellberg aims to implement a dynamic approach at Middlesbrough. "I want us to play quick and aggressive football, and to try to win the ball as quickly as possible if we don't have it," he stated. His strategy focuses on creating numerous scoring opportunities and maintaining an attacking mindset. "I want us to be quick on goal and create a lot of chances," he added.
The team has shown strong performance this season under interim leadership. They are positioned second in the Championship table with only two defeats in their initial 16 games. This sets a promising stage for Hellberg's upcoming tenure as head coach.
