Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was hospitalised on Friday, October 23, 2026, after collapsing while observing a training session involving the club's reserve team.
The 40-year-old Belgian manager is undergoing medical examinations and will remain under medical care, with his coaching staff temporarily taking charge of training and match preparations.
Why Was Vincent Kompany Hospitalised?
Kompany's hospitalisation comes after he had been struggling with a viral infection in recent days. The illness had already forced him to miss training activities and a pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern's UEFA Champions League fixture against Arsenal.
However, the precise medical cause of Friday's collapse has not been publicly confirmed, and it remains unclear whether the incident
was directly related to his earlier illness.
According to Bayern Munich's official statement, Kompany required medical attention after collapsing while watching the reserve team's training session. The club confirmed that he was undergoing a thorough examination in hospital and would remain under medical supervision.
The incident raised concerns about the manager's health, particularly after he had returned to the touchline for Wednesday's 2-2 Champions League draw against Arsenal despite being unwell.
What Did Vincent Kompany Say About His Illness?
Following the Arsenal match, Kompany acknowledged that he had pushed himself despite his illness.
"I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn't listen to my body - and then at some point my body just said, 'enough is enough!'"
His comments offered an insight into the physical difficulties he had experienced before Friday's incident. However, Bayern have not confirmed whether the viral infection caused his collapse.
What Is the Latest Update on Kompany's Health?
Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl stressed that the club's priority was the manager's recovery and confirmed that the coaching staff would handle his responsibilities in the meantime.
"Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority. At Bayern, we will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and he will be given as much time as he needs. "
Reports from Germany indicated that Kompany was in a stable condition, although the club's announcement focused on his ongoing examinations and medical care.
Bayern are scheduled to face Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, October 25. Kompany's availability for the fixture remains uncertain, with his recovery taking precedence over the team's proceedings.
