IPL 2026 Auction: The Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday officially unveiled the final shortlist of players for the much-anticipated mini-auction scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi. Out of the 1,390 players who had initially registered, 359 have made the final cut, including 246 Indians and 113 overseas cricketers.
With just 77 squad vacancies available across the 10 franchises - 31 of which are reserved for overseas players - competition is expected to be fierce, tactical and unpredictable.
Teams have freed up significant salary space by releasing several big-budget names after the previous season. As a result, analysts suggest this auction is likely to see bold decisions, surprise bids and mid-auction twists as franchises attempt to balance
youth with experience. While most attention usually gravitates toward explosive young talent, this year's list also features several seasoned veterans who, despite being on the older side, bring unmatched experience and proven skill sets.
Here are five experienced campaigners whose names stand out - and who might still command attention under the hammer:
Jalaj Saxena (Age 39)
The oldest name in this year's auction pool, Jalaj Saxena remains a domestic cricket giant. With a track record of consistency across formats, he offers versatility: dependable off-spin, lower-order batting and years of leadership experience. Though opportunities in previous IPL seasons were limited, franchises in need of a stabilising all-round option may view him as a valuable squad addition, especially with impact-sub flexibility. He previously played for Mumbai Indians in 2014/15 and Punjab Kings in 2021.
Karn Sharma (Age 38)
Karn Sharma's career is defined by clutch performances. A three-time IPL champion with three different teams, the leg-spinner understands high-pressure situations better than most. His ability to strike breakthroughs in the middle overs makes him a low-risk, high-utility signing for a side looking to strengthen its spin department without spending heavily on younger overseas options. Last season, he played for Mumbai Indians.
Umesh Yadav (Age 38)
Still regarded as one of India's most experienced fast bowlers, Umesh Yadav brings raw pace, new-ball swing and an attacking mindset. For teams seeking an Indian quick who can deliver early breakthroughs and guide younger pacers, Umesh provides both skill and mentorship value. His fitness and rhythm will dictate interest, but his experience remains an undeniable asset. Even though he last played in the 2024 season for Gujarat Titans, he didn't find any team in 2025. Let's see what's 2026 has in store for him.
Richard Gleeson (Age 38)
The English seamer has built a reputation in T20 leagues for sharp, skiddy spells and clever variations. At 38, he offers reliability and adaptability - qualities often missing in younger overseas pacers who take time to adjust to Indian pitches. A franchise looking for an affordable yet dependable middle-overs enforcer could easily look in Gleeson's direction. He played just one match last season for Mumbai Indians.
Steve Smith (Age 36)
Even at 36, Steve Smith remains one of the global faces of cricket. While his T20 strike-rate often sparks debate, his ability to read conditions, stabilise the top order and guide chases cannot be dismissed. Teams seeking an experienced anchor or a leadership presence - especially with a moderate base price - may still take a calculated punt on the former Australian captain. He last played in the IPL back in 2021.
