Alvaro Arbeloa believes Real Madrid can overturn the deficit against Bayern Munich without needing anything extraordinary. Real Madrid trail 2-1 in the Champions League quarter-final before the second leg at Allianz Arena on Wednesday. Kylian Mbappe scored in the first leg, after earlier goals from Luis Diaz and Harry Kane.
The Spanish side have strong recent form in Munich, staying unbeaten in the last four away visits. That sequence includes three wins and one draw. Arbeloa points to that record, and Real Madrid's European history, as proof the tie remains open despite Bayern Munich holding the advantage.
Historical numbers also support Real Madrid's optimism before the second leg in Germany. In the Bundesliga era, which starts from the 1963-64
season, only Werder Bremen and Koln have gone five straight away league games against Bayern without defeat. Real Madrid can match that mark with another positive result on Wednesday.
| Team | Unbeaten away run vs Bayern | Years |
|---|---|---|
| Real Madrid | 4 games (W3 D1) | Current run |
| Werder Bremen | 5 games | 1989-1992, 2007-2010 |
| Koln | 5 games | 2003-2010 |

Arbeloa underlined that Real Madrid's identity in Europe shapes how the squad view this situation. "First of all, we are Real Madrid. If there is a team that comes to this stadium to turn things around, it's us," said Arbeloa. "We are a team that never gives up, the team with 15 European Cups. We are Real Madrid and we will return with our badge or on top of it. "
Arbeloa also argued Real Madrid did not need anything spectacular in the first leg and do not now. "I dont see that we need to perform any miracles. If we won the other day, it wouldnt have been anything crazy. Their goalkeeper [Manuel Neuer] was the MVP. We are capable of doing it. Nobody who knows Real Madrid thinks that Real Madrid winning tomorrow will be a miracle. "
On the Bayern Munich side, Harry Kane enters the return game in strong form for the 2025-26 season. Kane has scored in four straight Champions League matches, registering six goals in that span. Another goal would equal the longest scoring run by an English player in the competition, held by Steven Gerrard from 2007-08.
Jude Bellingham, who plays with Kane for England, highlighted Kane's influence and status this season. "Whether he wins the Ballon d'Or depends on what his team does," said the Madrid midfielder. "He's a fantastic player, and I think they're going to win the Bundesliga, even though it pains me because of my brother [Jobe, who plays for Dortmund]. It's an honour to have him in the national team; he's shown how good he is. It's a pleasure to watch him play. Let's see if he can carry this over to the World Cup. I hope he doesn't show up, or that we know how to stop him. "
Real Madrid arrive in Munich needing at least one goal to stay alive, while Bayern Munich lean on home advantage and Kane's form. Arbeloa's comments reflect confidence built on history and recent away results, as both clubs, filled with stars, compete for a Champions League semi-final place.
