Lionel Messi added yet another landmark to his extraordinary career, becoming the first footballer ever to register 1300 goal contributions after producing a stunning performance in Inter Miami's emphatic
4-0 victory over FC Cincinnati on Sunday.
The Argentine icon delivered a goal and three assists, elevating his overall tally to 896 goals and 404 assists across 1134 professional appearances, cementing his position at the pinnacle of global football.
Messi's brilliance also set a new MLS playoff benchmark, as he reached 12 goal contributions in the postseason-six goals and six assists-more than any player in the competition's history. His impact helped Inter Miami secure their first-ever place in the Eastern Conference final, where they await the winner of the Philadelphia Union vs New York City FC semifinal.
Inter Miami set the tone early at Chase Stadium, with Messi breaking his brief scoring drought against Cincinnati in the 19th minute. Meeting a precise cross from Mateo Silvetti, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner headed home the opener to end his run of three goalless matches against the side. The goal marked his 11th strike in his last seven outings.
Cincinnati, who finished the regular MLS season with the second-best record-only behind Philadelphia-struggled to capitalise on their limited chances. Their most promising moment came when Ender Echenique nodded the ball into the path of Evander, whose attempt flew over the bar. Miami, meanwhile, remained in control, outshooting their opponents seven to four.
Just ten minutes into the second half, Silvetti doubled the advantage with a sharp finish past Roman Celentano. The young forward had stepped in for Luis Suárez, who missed Miami's previous playoff game due to suspension and was kept out of the lineup by Javier Mascherano.
Messi then orchestrated Miami's third goal with a superb defence-splitting pass in the 62nd minute, allowing Tadeo Allende to slot home. Allende later added his second in the 74th minute, sealing a dominant win for the hosts.
With Messi in record-breaking form and Miami's attack firing, the club heads into the Eastern Conference final with growing belief that this could be a historic postseason run.
