The IPL 2026 final will no longer be held in Bengaluru despite Royal Challengers Bengaluru being the defending champions, with BCCI shifting the marquee clash to Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium due to ticketing and logistical concerns.
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed that Bengaluru was initially the preferred venue under the tournament's hosting convention, where the home city of the defending champions usually gets the final. However, multiple constraints involving ticket availability and local obligations eventually forced the BCCI to move the match to Ahmedabad on May 31.
The decision has already sparked debate among fans and administrators, especially after the Karnataka State Cricket Association expressed disappointment over losing hosting
rights.
Why Bengaluru Lost the IPL 2026 Final
According to Arun Dhumal, the biggest challenge revolved around the limited seating capacity at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium compared to Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium.
While the Bengaluru venue can accommodate around 40,000 spectators, the Ahmedabad stadium can hold nearly 1.30 lakh fans, making it the largest cricket stadium in the world.
Dhumal explained that meeting mandatory commitments for complimentary tickets became increasingly difficult in Bengaluru.
"See ideally it should have been Bengaluru. We checked up with KSCA. Because what happened last year stampede, they had some challenges. State government needs to give free tickets to legislators and KSCA has some other commitments for their members," Dhumal said.
The Karnataka government reportedly has a quota system under which MLAs, MLCs, and MPs receive complimentary IPL tickets. Combined with KSCA member allocations and corporate obligations, that significantly reduced the number of tickets available for general fans.
Dhumal admitted that even during league matches in Bengaluru, ticket demand heavily exceeded supply.
BCCI Wanted Larger Venue for Fans and ICC Guests
The BCCI also considered the presence of international cricket officials during the same period.
An ICC board meeting is expected to take place around the IPL final window, meaning several international administrators and delegates are likely to travel to India simultaneously.
According to Dhumal, Ahmedabad's larger capacity made it a more practical choice for both fans and official guests.
"Considering all, definitely we all thought a larger venue would be more appropriate. Keeping the convenience of fans as well as international guests coming in for ICC board meetings, we decided on Ahmedabad," he said.
The BCCI also clarified that certain conditions imposed by local authorities in Bengaluru were outside the board's standard operational procedures and regulations.
RCB Miss Out Despite Being Defending Champions
Under IPL tradition in recent years, the defending champion's home city has usually received preference for hosting the next final.
Since Royal Challengers Bengaluru won IPL 2025, Bengaluru had been expected to stage the final this season.
Dhumal insisted that the BCCI had no intention of favouring Ahmedabad over other venues and said the same principle would have applied if another franchise had won the title last year.
"No, ideally the winning team gets the final but given the issues we touched upon, it becomes untenable to have it in Bengaluru. Let's say if CSK won last season we would surely do it in Chennai," Dhumal explained.
KSCA Unhappy With Venue Change
The Karnataka State Cricket Association was reportedly unhappy after losing the final despite preparations being underway.
KSCA officials argued that Bengaluru deserved the opportunity to host the tournament finale and believed the venue could have handled the event requirements.
However, the BCCI ultimately decided that Ahmedabad's larger infrastructure and ticketing flexibility made it the safer and more practical option.
Ahmedabad Continues to Host Major IPL Finals
The move has also revived criticism around Ahmedabad repeatedly hosting major IPL matches and finals.
Since the inauguration of the Narendra Modi Stadium, the venue has frequently staged: IPL finals, ICC tournament matches and finals, India's marquee international fixtures.
Some fans on social media questioned whether Ahmedabad was increasingly becoming the BCCI's preferred destination for marquee events.
Dhumal, however, firmly rejected suggestions of favouritism and maintained that logistical realities alone influenced the decision.
Ticket Demand Becoming Bigger IPL Challenge
The controversy also underlines the growing challenge surrounding IPL ticket demand.
With the league's popularity continuing to expand globally, final tickets have become among the most sought-after sporting commodities in India.
For venues with smaller capacities like Bengaluru, balancing: public demand, sponsor commitments, member allocations, complimentary quotas, and security protocols has become increasingly complicated.
The BCCI's decision suggests that future IPL finals may increasingly prioritise larger-capacity stadiums capable of handling both commercial and fan expectations simultaneously.
