Kolkata Knight Riders have signalled a dramatic shift in their team strategy ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, parting ways with several major names-most notably Andre Russell. The release of the iconic West
Indian all-rounder ends a glittering 12-year association that shaped KKR's identity both on and off the field.
Alongside Russell, the franchise has also let go of Venkatesh Iyer, Quinton de Kock, Moeen Ali, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Anrich Nortje and Spencer Johnson, creating significant room in their purse and overseas roster.
Armed with a hefty ₹64.3 crore and 13 vacant slots-including six for overseas players-KKR now approach the auction with unmatched flexibility. Russell alone accounted for ₹12 crore, and although a buy-back remains possible, KKR may instead target a fresh core to carry the franchise into a new era. Here are four players KKR should strongly consider in the IPL 2026 auction:
1. Glenn Maxwell (All-rounder)
With Russell gone, KKR need a dynamic middle-order enforcer who can also contribute with the ball. Glenn Maxwell fits that role perfectly. A T20 World Cup winner and one of the most destructive hitters in the format, Maxwell brings vast experience and an unmatched ability to dominate spin. His capability to bowl tight off-spin-often delivering four crucial overs-makes him the closest like-for-like replacement for Russell in terms of utility and match-winning potential.
2. Matheesha Pathirana (Pacer)
KKR's decision to release Anrich Nortje leaves a void in the pace department, especially in the death overs. Matheesha Pathirana, with his slingy, Malinga-inspired action, is one of the most exciting young quicks in world cricket. His yorkers, late dip, and ability to strike at crucial moments make him an ideal fit for KKR's revamped bowling unit. Pathirana can both contain runs and pick up wickets-an invaluable combination.
3. Josh Inglis (Overseas Batter)
To strengthen their middle order and add overseas batting firepower, Josh Inglis is a strong contender. The Australian wicketkeeper-batter has had a consistent run in the IPL and played key innings for Punjab in their runners-up campaign. Inglis offers flexibility-he can bat anywhere between No. 3 and No. 6-and brings sharp intent, making him a high-value overseas signing.
4. Mayank Agarwal or Rahul Tripathi (Indian Batter)
With Venkatesh Iyer released, KKR need a reliable Indian batter who can anchor or attack depending on the situation. Both Mayank Agarwal and Rahul Tripathi are ideal choices. Agarwal impressed last season when he joined RCB as a replacement and played a steady hand in their title run. Tripathi, meanwhile, already has history with KKR and could thrive in a familiar environment. Either player would strengthen KKR's Indian core significantly.
