Giovanni Reyna made a significant impact in the United States' 2-1 victory over Paraguay, according to Mauricio Pochettino. This match marked Reyna's first start for the USMNT since July 2024. He scored
by heading the ball off the crossbar in the fourth minute. This was also his first start since playing for Borussia Monchengladbach against Werder Bremen on September 14.
Reyna became the 51st different player to start for the USA in 2025, a notable figure following 54 players in 2023. Despite Alex Arce equalising for Paraguay in the 10th minute, Folarin Balogun secured the win for the USA with a goal in the 71st minute after Reyna's centre deflected into his path. Reyna was instrumental, creating two chances and completing more passes in the final third than any other player.
Pochettino praised Reyna's ability to read the game and find space, describing it as a "nightmare for Paraguay. " He acknowledged Reyna's excellent performance but emphasised that he needs more regular playtime in the Bundesliga before next year's World Cup. "He scored, he did a very good job," Pochettino stated. "We’re so happy with him. "
The USA and Paraguay each had eight shots during the match, but the hosts led with an expected goals (xG) score of 1.11 compared to Paraguay's 0.7. The USA remains unbeaten in four games, including three wins and one draw, as they prepare to face Uruguay in Tampa, Florida. However, Pochettino believes there is room for improvement.
"We created chances and were better against a competitive team," said Pochettino. "But that is not enough. We need to keep improving to reach our peak at the World Cup. " The USA has scored four goals within the first four minutes of matches in 2025, matching their record from 2019.

Reyna’s return has been promising for both him and his team. His performance against Paraguay highlighted his potential impact on future matches. As they continue their preparations for upcoming challenges, maintaining this momentum will be crucial for their success on bigger stages like the World Cup next year.
