Arne Slot expressed that assessing the impact of Diogo Jota's passing on Liverpool is challenging. Despite this, he refuses to use it as a reason for the team's recent struggles. Jota and his brother,
Andre Silva, tragically died in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, in July. The loss has deeply affected the Liverpool squad, with Andy Robertson sharing an emotional moment after Scotland secured a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
Slot acknowledged Robertson's heartfelt interview, noting its significance for the team. "I saw the interview [with Robertson] live and I know that it is an issue for us, which is completely normal," Slot stated. He emphasised that while they miss Jota as both a player and person, it's crucial to remember his contributions. Last season against Nottingham Forest, Jota scored an equaliser just one minute after being down 1-0.
Liverpool's recent form has been concerning, with five losses in their last six Premier League matches (W1). This is more than their total losses during their title-winning season last year. Before this slump, they had only lost five of their previous 49 league games (W33 D11). Slot's team currently sits eighth in the Premier League table, marking their lowest position at this stage since April 2023.
Despite upcoming fixtures against Forest, West Ham, and Leeds United appearing favourable, Slot remains cautious about title prospects. The Opta supercomputer gives Liverpool a 7.9% chance of retaining their title, trailing behind Manchester City (22.6%) and Arsenal (63%). "I've said many times, at this moment in time we are not thinking or talking about it," Slot remarked.
Slot confirmed goalkeeper Alisson's return from a hamstring injury ahead of facing Sean Dyche's team at Anfield. Alisson missed eight matches across all competitions during his recovery. Giorgi Mamardashvili stepped in as deputy but conceded 11 goals in seven appearances with only two clean sheets. "Alisson trained last week and this week, so he will be able to play tomorrow if things work out well today," Slot mentioned.
However, Liverpool faces challenges with injuries post-international break. Defender Conor Bradley and midfielder Florian Wirtz are unavailable due to issues sustained during international duty. "Conor Bradley is not able to play and Florian Wirtz is not able to play," Slot confirmed. These absences add to the team's current difficulties.

Slot reiterated that while they miss Jota immensely as both a player and individual, it's impossible to quantify how his absence affects results. "The last thing I would do is use it as an excuse," he stated firmly. As Liverpool prepares for their match against Nottingham Forest at home on Saturday, they aim to regain momentum despite these challenges.
