Chennai, May 19: Sunrisers Hyderabad strengthened their IPL 2026 playoff hopes with a clinical win over Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk on Monday (May 18), but the match also exposed several glaring issues in the CSK camp that could ultimately cost them a place in the knockouts.
While SRH sealed a playoff berth with the victory and simultaneously confirmed Gujarat Titans' qualification in second place, CSK were left clinging to only an outside chance of progressing. Even if they win their final league game, their qualification hopes now depend heavily on other results going their way.

CSK's Bowling Attack Lacked Penetration Again
One of the biggest concerns for CSK throughout IPL 2026 has been their inability to consistently take wickets
in the middle overs, and the problem surfaced again against SRH.
Even after the early dismissal of Travis Head, CSK failed to capitalise. Ishan Kishan anchored the chase brilliantly with a composed 70, while Heinrich Klaasen played a mature hand of 47 to ensure Hyderabad never lost control of the target.
CSK's bowlers struggled to create pressure consistently, allowing the SRH batters to dictate terms through most phases of the chase.
Mukesh Choudhary was the standout performer with two wickets, but the lack of support from the rest of the attack proved costly. The bowling unit looked short of ideas once the ball got older, particularly in the middle overs where SRH rotated strike comfortably.
Another worrying trend for CSK has been the dip in form of Anshul Kamboj. The young pacer had enjoyed a sensational start to IPL 2026, picking up 17 wickets in his first nine matches at an economy rate of 8.49. However, over his last four games, he has managed just three wickets while conceding runs at an alarming economy of 13.97.
The downturn has coincided with CSK's bowling struggles during the business end of the tournament. Kamboj also entered an unwanted IPL list during the match, equalling 30 sixes conceded in a single season - tied with names like Wanindu Hasaranga, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kagiso Rabada. Only Rashid Khan has conceded more in an IPL season with 33 in 2025.
Akeal Hosein Provided Rare Control
While most bowlers leaked runs, Akeal Hosein stood out for his discipline and control. The left-arm spinner conceded just 21 runs from his three overs and also removed Abhishek Sharma at a crucial stage. On a surface where most bowlers struggled for rhythm, Hosein's spell was one of the few positives for CSK.
However, the decision to not complete his full quota of overs may also raise questions considering how effectively he controlled the scoring rate.
Ruturaj Gaikwad's Toss Decision Backfired
CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad could come under scrutiny for what turned out to be a costly tactical error at the toss.
After winning the toss, Gaikwad surprisingly chose to bat first despite Chepauk increasingly becoming a venue favouring chasing teams this season. The decision looked even more puzzling given CSK's recent success while chasing at the same venue.
In their previous game against Lucknow Super Giants at Chepauk, CSK comfortably chased down 204 with five wickets to spare. That match had already shown that batting became easier under lights.
Against SRH, however, CSK failed to fully capitalise after opting to set a target. Their total eventually appeared at least 20 runs short of what was required on a batting-friendly pitch. In a high-scoring contest, they ideally needed a score in excess of 190 to genuinely pressure Hyderabad.
Instead, SRH approached the chase calmly and never looked overwhelmed by the asking rate.
CSK's Fielding Woes Continue
Another recurring issue for CSK this season has been sloppy fielding, and it once again proved expensive.
The turning point arguably came in the 10th over when Klaasen received an early reprieve on 18. Off Noor Ahmad's bowling, Klaasen miscued a sweep towards backward square, but Johnson failed to hold on despite getting both hands to the ball while diving forward.
Klaasen made CSK pay heavily after that missed chance, building a crucial partnership with Kishan that effectively took the game away from the hosts.
The dropped opportunity further highlighted the growing concerns around CSK's intensity in the field - an area where the franchise traditionally built its reputation during its dominant years.
Historic Win For SRH
For SRH, the victory carried added significance beyond playoff qualification. It marked successive wins for Hyderabad against CSK at Chepauk after they had lost five consecutive matches in Chennai since 2013.
