Rory McIlroy has expressed scepticism about the potential merger between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and LIV Golf. Despite an agreement to merge, negotiations have been ongoing for over two years. McIlroy believes that while unification could benefit golf, the financial practices of LIV Golf present significant challenges. "You see some of these other sports that have been fractured for so long," McIlroy told CNBC.
LIV Golf, backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), entered the golfing world in October 2021, attracting players from the PGA Tour. The spending habits of LIV are a major concern for McIlroy. He compared the situation to other sports like boxing and motor racing in the United States, suggesting that unification would
be beneficial but difficult to achieve.
McIlroy highlighted that many contracts with LIV are nearing their end, and players might demand similar or higher compensation. He noted that LIV has already invested five to six billion US dollars and would need to spend a similar amount to maintain its position. This financial strategy is seen as irrational by McIlroy, who supports traditional golf structures.

The financial implications of maintaining LIV's current status are substantial. McIlroy feels more aligned with the PGA Tour's approach but acknowledges uncertainty about future developments. "I'm way more comfortable being on the PGA Tour side than on their side," he stated, reflecting his preference for stability within traditional golf frameworks.
Despite recognising potential benefits from merging tours, McIlroy remains doubtful due to past events and financial strategies employed by LIV Golf. The complexity of merging these entities lies not only in aligning interests but also in reconciling differing financial philosophies.
The ongoing discussions highlight broader issues within professional golf regarding competition and collaboration among major tours. As negotiations continue, stakeholders must navigate these challenges while considering long-term impacts on the sport's landscape globally.
