LeBron James stressed that the Western Conference semi-final opener was about the teams, not individuals, after the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Los Angeles Lakers 108-90 in Game 1 at PayCom Center. James argued that debate around Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s scoring display missed the real issue for the Lakers, which was falling behind 1-0 in the best-of-seven series.
James finished as the night’s top scorer with 27 points, hitting 12 of 17 shots in an efficient performance that could not prevent defeat. Speaking after the game, James said, "This ain't Shai versus the Lakers, it's Lakers versus the Thunder," and added, "We're down 1-0. That's the main thing. Gilgeous-Alexander, the reigning MVP, had a quieter offensive night than usual, posting 18 points while converting eight of 15 field-goal attempts. That total marked Gilgeous-Alexander’s lowest scoring output since Game 3 against the Minnesota Timberwolves in last season’s Western Conference finals, yet the Thunder still controlled the contest and closed out a convincing 18-point win.
The Thunder star also recorded seven turnovers, his highest figure in any game this season, with the last higher count coming in Game 6 of the previous NBA Finals, when Gilgeous-Alexander committed eight. Despite those numbers, Oklahoma City managed the tempo, limited the Lakers’ runs and received production across the rotation to secure an early edge in this Lakers vs Thunder matchup.

Chet Holmgren delivered the key scoring punch for Oklahoma City, leading the Thunder with 24 points while also grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking three shots. The center’s rim protection and floor spacing stretched the Lakers’ defence, and Holmgren later defended Gilgeous-Alexander’s stat line, arguing that some of the turnovers were shared mistakes by the Thunder offence.
Holmgren said of Gilgeous-Alexander, "I think he made the right decision all night long, Holmgren said on Gilgeous-Alexander. I think there were a lot of opportunities where we weren't where we needed to be and he was expecting us to be there. We had a couple turnovers in the pocket like that where he threw it right to where we should have been and we weren't there. In the stat book, those are his turnovers, but they shouldn't be. We got to improve, be better, be where we need to be. "
