Suryakumar Yadav masterminded India's T20 World Cup 2026 triumph, yet persistent batting form concerns have prompted the BCCI to explore fresh leadership options for the T20I side.
As per latest reports, Suryakumar Yadav is set to lose his captaincy from the T20 team, and is likely to be dropped for the upcoming Ireland T20I series and the subsequent England series. Amid this, two players have emerged as frontrunners to lead the Indian team in the shortest format of the game.
Sanju Samson
The dynamic wicketkeeper-batter shone as Player of the Tournament in the 2026 T20 World Cup, delivering match-winning knocks like his explosive 89 off 46 in the final. His IPL leadership with Rajasthan Royals showcased growth as he captained them to the 2021 final and recorded
strong win rates with consistent personal contributions.
Samson's calm demeanour, tactical acumen in high-pressure chases, and ability to balance keeping/batting roles make him ideal for T20 cricket's demands. Head coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly backs him for injecting aggression and positivity.
Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer boasts the strongest recent captaincy credentials in domestic cricket. He has led three different IPL franchises - Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders (to the 2024 title), and Punjab Kings, to finals, becoming the only skipper to achieve this feat. His proactive field placements, man-management, and middle-order stability impressed selectors during IPL 2026. Though absent from recent T20Is, Iyer's ODI vice-captaincy experience and composure under pressure position him as a safe, forward-thinking choice for building a young core.
Tilak Varma
As per PTI reports, Tilak Varma is also in the running for a captaincy promotion. The southpaw has been backed by Rohit Sharma to lead Mumbai Indians in the coming season, and he may well be looked as the next captain for the T20 side. Tilak has been a key part of India's T20I setup in recent times, and his calm approach and decision-taking ability is being seen as a result behind his backing as captain.
As per reports, Sanju Samson is highly rated by Gautam Gambhir and the head coach wants Sanju to take over the reins in the T20 team. The chief selector Ajit Agarkar is more inclined towards Shreyas Iyer, who has rejuvenated his stakes in recent times. Anyways, it can be safely said that the Indian T20 team is set for a new leader.
Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20I format after the T20 World Cup 2024 win, while Surya is set to be sacked, despite winning the T20 World Cup crown in 2026.
