Kang Yeon-seo, just 14, has emerged as one of the biggest stories of the Asian Games 2026 after defeating defending champion Jyothi Surekha Vennam 150-146 in the women's compound individual Round of 16.
The South Korean teenager delivered a perfect 150-point score to eliminate India's three-time Asian Games gold medallist and advance to the quarterfinals in Aichi-Nagoya.
Who is Kang Yeon-seo?
Born on November 1, 2011, Kang is a middle school student at Seongsa Middle School and has already broken new ground in South Korean archery.
She became the country's youngest-ever national team member after earning her place in the senior compound squad in 2026. Her selection came after she finished third at the final national team selection event in April, having also placed
third in the previous selection event.
Her Asian Games selection followed soon after, making her the first middle schooler to represent South Korea in compound archery at the Games.
Kang's emergence has also come at a significant time for the discipline, with mixed team compound set to make its Olympic debut as a medal event at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
How did Kang Yeon-seo beat Jyothi?
Kang entered the individual competition as one of South Korea's young prospects but showed little sign of being overawed by the occasion.
She scored 701 points in the ranking round to finish fourth and then continued her run with a 150-133 victory over Mongolia's Otgonbayar Dagdzhav in the Round of 32.
Against Jyothi, the defending champion and one of the biggest names in compound archery, Kang raised her level further.
She shot a perfect 150 out of 150, including a flawless sequence of arrows, to beat Jyothi 150-146 and book her place in the quarterfinals.
The result was particularly notable given Jyothi's record at the Asian Games. She had won three gold medals at the Hangzhou Games and entered the competition as India's leading medal hope in the discipline.
A historic rise through South Korean archery
Kang's rapid rise is also a reflection of the intensity of South Korea's archery selection system.
Her arrival in the national team came at the expense of more established names, with the country's selection process once again showing that past achievements do not guarantee a place in the squad.
Kang even broke the previous record for South Korea's youngest national team member. That mark had belonged to Kim Je-deok, who represented South Korea in recurve archery at the Tokyo Olympics at 17 and won two gold medals.
At 14, Kang is three years younger than Kim was when he set that benchmark.
What has Kang achieved at Asian Games 2026?
Kang has already played a part in South Korea's strong showing in the women's compound team event alongside Park Ye-rin and Park Jeong-yoon.
The Korean trio scored 2,096 points in the ranking round, finishing third behind China and India, who both scored 2,099.
Kang has now carried that form into the individual competition, where her perfect 150 against Jyothi has taken her into the last eight.
Her quarterfinal appearance marks another milestone in what has already been a remarkable first senior season.
The bigger picture
Kang's breakthrough comes as South Korean compound archery looks towards the 2028 Olympics, when mixed team compound will be contested as an official medal event for the first time.
For now, though, the teenager's focus is on the Asian Games. Having already eliminated the defending champion with a perfect score, Kang has emerged as one of the youngest and most unexpected quarterfinalists in Aichi-Nagoya.
