India's T20 World Cup 2026 team has seen the omission of Shubman Gill, as the India Test and ODI captain was left out of the 15-member squad.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav and chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced the team, which has seen the arrival of Axar Patel, who will deputise Suryakumar in the upcoming tournament.
Gill has been a regular in the T20 side in recent times, but the star batter was dropped from the final squad for the World Cup. When asked about the reason behind his snub, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Suryakumar Yadav were in unison to dismiss Gill's form being the reason.
"Shubman is unfortunate to miss out, but it is just the combinations. He has been short of runs but nobody is talking about Jaiswal, he is missing as well.
At the end of the day, you are looking to see different options and best combination to give you the best chance to do well in the World Cup. That's what we felt," Agarkar said at the press conference.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav was also quick to downplay the form issue, and stressed on the team combination.
"Post the T20 WC, when we went to Sri Lanka and I was captain for the first time, Shubman played a key part. It is not about Shubman Gill's form, but it was just about team combination. We just wanted to have a keeper at the top, and wanted a Rinku Singh as a finisher. The form has no question, as we can't question his quality. Hence it is all about what the team needs," the India captain said.
