New Delhi, April 8: Gujarat Titans edged past Delhi Capitals by a dramatic 1-run margin in a last-ball thriller in IPL 2026 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday (April 8), with David Miller's heroic late charge ultimately falling short in a contest that swung wildly till the very end.
Chasing a daunting target of 211, Delhi Capitals finished on 209/8 in their 20 overs, coming within touching distance of what would have been one of the great chases of the season. The equation boiled down to 2 runs required off the final two deliveries, and Miller brought the crowd to life by smashing Prasidh Krishna for a six earlier in the over.
However, in a defining moment, the left-hander chose not to rotate strike on the fifth ball, backing himself to finish
the game. That decision proved costly as a single would have levelled the scores and forced a Super Over. Instead, a desperate attempt on the final ball resulted in a run-out, sealing a thrilling win for Gujarat.
Miller's knock of 41 off just 20 balls was the highlight of Delhi's chase, played at a strike rate exceeding 200, and it nearly turned the match on its head. His innings were all the more remarkable considering he had briefly walked off the field due to pain in his fingers before returning to resume the chase. Earlier in the innings, KL Rahul had provided stability at the top with a composed effort, while Pathum Nissanka ensured a brisk start as Delhi raced to 67 without loss in the powerplay. However, the innings lost momentum in the middle overs as Gujarat's bowlers struck at regular intervals, with Rashid Khan playing a key role in breaking partnerships.
The turning point in the chase seemed to arrive in the 19th over, bowled by Mohammed Siraj, which yielded 23 runs and brought Delhi right back into contention. That over shifted the pressure onto Gujarat and set up a tense final over, but Prasidh Krishna held his nerve despite the onslaught. The dismissals of Tristan Stubbs through a run-out and KL Rahul in the 17th over had earlier tilted the balance back towards Gujarat, leaving Miller with too much to do in the closing stages.
Earlier in the evening, the Gujarat Titans had posted an imposing total of 210/4 after being put in to bat. Shubman Gill led the charge with a fluent half-century, anchoring the innings while maintaining a healthy scoring rate. Washington Sundar played a pivotal role in the middle overs with a well-crafted fifty, combining composure with timely aggression to keep the scoreboard ticking. Jos Buttler added further impetus with a quick-fire cameo at the top, ensuring Gujarat got off to a strong start before consolidating through partnerships in the middle phase.
Delhi's bowlers had moments of control but struggled to contain Gujarat in the death overs, where the Titans capitalised to push past the 200-run mark. While Lungi Ngidi managed a key breakthrough and Axar Patel kept things tight during parts of the innings, the lack of control in the final overs proved expensive.
In the end, the contest was decided by the finest of margins, with one decision and one delivery making all the difference. Gujarat Titans walked away with a crucial win that could prove significant in their campaign, while Delhi Capitals were left to reflect on a missed opportunity in a match that was theirs for the taking at multiple stages.
