India could face a selection dilemma ahead of their second match of the T20 World Cup 2026 against Namibia, with opener Abhishek Sharma still recovering from illness. The left-handed batter's participation remains uncertain, although the team management is hopeful he will regain fitness in time for the contest at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on February 12.
Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate provided an update on Abhishek's condition during a media interaction, indicating that the youngster is still dealing with stomach-related discomfort.
"Abhi has still got a few issues with his tummy, but we are hopeful he will be available for the game in two days time," ten Doeschate said. The concerns over his fitness grew further after Abhishek missed India's
practice session shortly after the press conference.
If Abhishek is eventually ruled out, India have a couple of options to fill the opening slot. Sanju Samson is considered the most straightforward replacement. Samson previously partnered at the top of the order but lost his spot following a string of underwhelming performances during the series against South Africa. Another possible alternative could be Washington Sundar, who may provide additional balance with his all-round capabilities. Sundar recently returned to training after recovering from an injury that kept him out of the South Africa T20Is. The assistant coach confirmed that the off-spinner resumed practice and is expected to bowl again soon.
Apart from Abhishek's fitness concerns, India are also monitoring the condition of senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah. The star fast bowler has recovered from illness but has not bowled for nearly ten days, leaving uncertainty over his immediate return. "Bumrah has been off 10 days without bowling, but he's feeling a lot better and moving a lot better," ten Doeschate explained.
Should Bumrah regain full fitness, Mohammed Siraj is likely to make way despite his impressive three-wicket performance against the USA. Siraj has been viewed as India's third-choice seamer behind Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh.
India will be keen to finalise their playing combination soon, with Abhishek's recovery likely to play a crucial role in shaping their top-order plans for the Namibia clash.
