India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is set to focus mainly on One-Day Internationals in the build-up to the 2027 Cricket World Cup, with selectors likely to pull Bumrah back from non-essential cricket.
As per a CricBlogger report, BCCI sources claimed that Bumrah is expected to return for the ODI series against England, which will mark the next phase of planning.
Officials believe this schedule would hand Bumrah roughly six weeks of recovery before structured World Cup preparation begins. The aim is to keep the right-arm pacer fresh for the long campaign in 2027, while avoiding excessive cricket after a demanding season across formats and tournaments, including the ongoing IPL commitments.
Jasprit Bumrah workload plan and ODI series against England
According to those aware of discussions, selectors and support
staff may even extend Bumrah's break if needed. If Bumrah signals the need for more recovery time, officials are prepared to adjust the timeline. The ODI series against England is therefore seen as a target, not an absolute deadline.
Jasprit Bumrah Test plans and 2027 World Cup preparation
Despite this careful ODI planning, Bumrah is expected to stay available for major Test series. Key assignments include future contests against Australia national cricket team, England cricket team, New Zealand national cricket team and South Africa national cricket team. Management still views Bumrah as India's leading strike bowler in red-ball cricket.
Bumrah has previously skipped matches, including some Tests, as part of workload management. Support staff members have occasionally stepped in and decided which games Bumrah should miss to protect fitness. Among India bowlers, Bumrah is currently in a rare position, with the ability to choose schedules more flexibly, especially before major ICC tournaments.
Jasprit Bumrah IPL form and ODIs against England
There are also quiet discussions around Bumrah continuing to represent Mumbai Indians even after the franchise's elimination. The team has reportedly paid close to Rs 30 crore for the season. A source questioned this approach, saying, "What's the point of making Bumrah play any more IPL games? and suggested early rest would help national plans.
Bumrah's IPL figures underline the concern. Across 13 matches, Bumrah has taken only four wickets, placing Bumrah 64th on the wicket-takers' list. This return contrasts with Bumrah's usual impact as India's primary wicket-taker in all formats and strengthens the case for immediate rest before the ODI series against England and the 2027 World Cup build-up.
