India's opening combination has emerged as a key selection debate ahead of the fourth T20I against West Indies, with Sanju Samson's inconsistent returns and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's continued absence raising questions about the team management's plans. While Sooryavanshi's recent numbers strengthen his case for an opportunity, Samson's ability to produce match-defining innings and his wicketkeeping role complicate the decision.
India lead the five-match series 2-1 and can secure the series with a victory in Hyderabad on Wednesday, October 14. The immediate priority is to close out the contest, but the management must also weigh whether to persist with Samson or give the 15-year-old left-hander a chance before the series concludes in Bengaluru on October 17.
Sanju Samson vs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: Who Has the Stronger Case?
Samson's returns in the ongoing series have fluctuated sharply. He scored 11 off nine balls in the opening T20I in Lucknow, responded with an 82 off 41 deliveries in Ranchi, and then managed just three off six balls in Indore, falling early with India at 7/1.
His struggles have extended beyond the West Indies series. Samson scored seven and two in the Asian Games semi-final and final respectively, leaving him with 105 runs from his last five innings at a strike rate of 152.17.
Sooryavanshi, meanwhile, has produced stronger aggregate numbers across his last five T20I innings. He has scored 204 runs at a strike rate of 190.65, including an 81 off 49 balls, a 50 off 19 and a 38 off 21. However, 151 of those runs came in three innings against Zimbabwe in July.
His performances against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the Asian Games were more modest, yielding 53 runs from 30 deliveries. He scored 38 off 21 in the semi-final and 15 off nine in the gold-medal match, where he opened alongside Abhishek Sharma.
The comparison favours Sooryavanshi on recent consistency and overall scoring rate, but Samson's 82 in Ranchi remains a reminder of the impact he can have when he gets going.
Why India's Team Management May Continue to Back Samson
Samson's strongest argument is his ability to produce substantial innings. In September, he scored 57 off 22 balls and 50 off 35 against Afghanistan. In the third T20I against West Indies, he was coming off a poor outing, but his earlier performance in the series demonstrated his capacity to change a game quickly.
He also offers India a wicketkeeping option. Samson kept wickets in Indore, and dropping him would likely mean handing the gloves to Ishan Kishan, the only other wicketkeeper in the squad.
A change at the top, therefore, would involve more than replacing one opener with another. The team would need to consider the effect on its wicketkeeping arrangement and the balance of the playing XI.
There is also a tactical question. Abhishek and Sooryavanshi are both left-handers, whereas Samson provides a right-handed option. Pairing the two left-handers could reduce the variety in India's opening combination, although Sooryavanshi has already opened successfully alongside Abhishek in the Asian Games final.
Sooryavanshi has also yet to face West Indies in T20Is, having played against England, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Giving him an opportunity would introduce an element of uncertainty against an opponent he has not yet encountered at this level.
Abhishek Sharma Remains India's First-Choice Opener
Abhishek Sharma appears to be the fixed point in India's opening plans. After modest returns in the first two T20Is, he responded with an explosive 69 off 30 balls in Indore, hitting five fours and six sixes.
He also scored 61 off 28 deliveries in the Asian Games final against Pakistan. His ability to attack from the outset makes the identity of his opening partner the central selection question.
Sooryavanshi partnered Abhishek in that gold-medal match, while Samson featured lower down the order. Samson managed only two off four balls before India went on to post 211/6 and win by 19 runs.
That performance gives the management a recent example of how the alternative opening combination could function. However, one match does not settle the question of whether the pair should be preferred in an international series.
Abhishek Nayar Backs Sooryavanshi for the Fifth T20I
Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar has advocated giving Sooryavanshi an opportunity in the final T20I, provided India seal the series in Hyderabad.
"I would want India to go 3-1 up, and for the last game, Sooryavanshi plays. So keep it simple: Go 3-1 up, wrap the series up, and let Sooryavanshi play the last one," Nayar said on Star Sports.
His suggestion offers a compromise between securing the series and providing the teenager with further international experience. India would retain their established combination for the fourth match, then have the freedom to experiment in Bengaluru if they take an unassailable 3-1 lead.
Nayar also praised Abhishek's response to West Indies spinner Roston Chase in the third T20I. After being dismissed by Chase in each of the first two matches, Abhishek adjusted his approach and produced a decisive innings.
Nayar highlighted the batter's ability to read a bowler's plans and adapt during an innings, rather than relying solely on aggression from the first delivery.
Sooryavanshi's Childhood Coach Criticises India Management
Sooryavanshi's continued exclusion has also drawn criticism from his childhood coach, Manish Ojha, who accused the Gautam Gambhir-led team management of adopting a "dictatorship" approach to selection.
Speaking to Times Now, Ojha argued that young players need match experience to develop and questioned the decision to keep Sooryavanshi on the sidelines.
"This current Indian team management, they feel that they make players by keeping them on the bench," Ojha said, arguing that opportunities to play are essential for a youngster's development.
He also expressed concern that repeated omissions could affect the teenager's confidence, suggesting that being left out could make a player question his value to the team.
Ojha described Sooryavanshi as a player with enormous potential, saying his talent would become evident over the coming years. According to the figures cited in the report, the youngster has scored 246 runs in eight T20Is at a strike rate of 186 since making his debut in July 2026.
However, the coach's frustration does not necessarily mean India should alter their plans immediately. Selection must account for the team's immediate objectives as well as the longer-term development of a young player.
Will India Change Their Opening Combination in Hyderabad?
India's series position makes the fourth T20I a significant decision point. A victory would secure the series at 3-1 and allow the management to consider giving Sooryavanshi an opportunity in the final match without compromising the immediate result.
The numbers provide a case for the teenager, but Samson's match-winning potential and wicketkeeping role remain important considerations. Abhishek's recent return to form also reduces the need for a wholesale reshuffle at the top.
Nayar's proposal to preserve the existing combination for Hyderabad and introduce Sooryavanshi in Bengaluru offers a measured alternative to an immediate change. It would give India the opportunity to finish the series first before assessing their options for the final match.
For now, the selection question is not simply whether Sooryavanshi has earned a chance, but when India should give him one. A series-clinching win in Hyderabad could provide the clearest route to answering that question.
