Bayern Munich stayed unbeaten in their Bundesliga title defence with a fierce 5-1 comeback win over RB Leipzig at Red Bull Arena, turning a tense match into a dominant second-half display that underlined
Vincent Kompany’s team as clear leaders despite trailing at the interval.
The champions struck all five goals after half-time, with Bayern’s attack exploding following several tactical changes. Serge Gnabry levelled early in the second period, Harry Kane then fired Bayern ahead, before Jonathan Tah, Aleksandar Pavlovic and substitute Michael Olise completed a ruthless spell that broke Leipzig’s resistance.
Olise only entered the match in the 56th minute, replacing Lennart Karl, yet shaped the entire contest. The winger delivered the cross for Kane’s composed 67th-minute finish into the top-left corner, then provided the set-piece for Tah’s header and the pass for Pavlovic’s neat strike.
Olise then scored Bayern’s fifth on 88 minutes with a curling effort that confirmed a standout cameo. That performance placed Olise alongside Franck Ribery in Bundesliga records, as Olise became only the second player since 2004-05 to provide three assists as a substitute in one league match.
Leipzig had earlier controlled large spells of a frantic first half. Romulo forced a sharp save from Manuel Neuer, while Antonio Nusa somehow missed from close range after Yan Diomande’s driven cross. The pressure finally told when Romulo slid in to convert David Raum’s low delivery after a slick move.
Bayern had not won a Bundesliga away game when behind at half-time since 2 September against Borussia Monchengladbach, failing in seven such matches. Kompany’s side overturned that trend here, using improved pressing and quicker wide play to pin Leipzig back and punish defensive lapses during the final 25 minutes.
Match data underlined the contest’s attacking nature for both clubs. Bayern produced an expected goals figure of 4.63 from 19 shots, with 12 efforts on target. Leipzig recorded 17 attempts and an xG of 2.46, but wasteful finishing and Bayern’s second-half accuracy meant the champions extended their strong start to the season.
