The United States moved into the World Cup last 32 with a controlled 2-0 victory over Australia at Seattle Stadium, sealing progress from Group D. An early Cameron Burgess own goal and an Alex Freeman header decided the match, leaving Tony Popovic’s side needing a result in their final game to keep qualification hopes alive.
Both teams entered this Group D contest with three points, knowing another win would guarantee a place in the knockout rounds. The USA reached six points and remain in strong contention for top spot, while Australia now face a decisive meeting with Paraguay on June 25.

This result also lifted the USA’s World Cup scoring record. The team reached six goals for the tournament, leaving them one short of their best tally at a single World Cup, set at seven in both 1930 and 2002. Another goal against Turkiye would match that mark, and any extra would set a new benchmark.
Freeman’s close-range header continued a notable pattern for the United States at World Cups. The defender became only the second member of a USA back line to score at the tournament since 1994, following John Brooks’ goal against Ghana in 2014. The opening own goal also extended another striking trend.
The United States have now benefited from five own goals across all World Cups, including two during this edition. This match was additionally only the second time the USA scored more than once before half-time in consecutive games at the tournament, a feat previously achieved during the inaugural 1930 competition.

Australia almost stunned the crowd inside the first minute, when Mohamed Toure broke clear down the right. Toure’s low effort from a narrow angle forced Matt Freese into an early save. That scare seemed to sharpen the USA, who soon pushed higher and began winning territory down both flanks.
The breakthrough arrived in the 11th minute after Folarin Balogun surged past his marker on the left. Balogun drilled a low cross into the six-yard area, where Ricardo Pepi was set for a simple finish. Burgess, tracking back under pressure, diverted the ball past goalkeeper Alessandro Circati and into the net for 1-0.
Australia almost answered immediately at the other end. Mathew Leckie created space on the edge of the box and struck with the outside of the boot, sending the ball narrowly over the bar. The USA continued to find openings, with Weston McKennie heading straight at Circati from close range during another promising attack.
The United States doubled the advantage just before half-time through Freeman. Sergino Dest saw a shot blocked, and the ball looped high inside the area. Freeman reacted quickest, nodding into an empty net. An offside flag initially ruled it out, but a VAR review showed the defender had timed the run correctly, and the goal stood.
World Cup second-half chances for Australia and USA
Balogun produced another eye-catching run early in the second half, weaving forward from deep. The forward’s solo move ended with a shot from just inside the area, which Australia managed to block. The USA briefly threatened to extend the lead, but could not find a decisive third goal to completely end the contest.
Australia grew into the match after the hour as Popovic introduced substitutes who added energy. Cristian Volpato fired over the crossbar from a promising position, then Connor Metcalfe shot straight at Freese during another spell of pressure. The United States resisted those attacks but occasionally lost defensive focus late on.
One of Australia’s better late moments came when Jacob Italiano sent a high cross towards the back post. The delivery floated beyond several players, was retrieved on the far side, and worked back into the danger area. Circati drove a low shot through traffic, but the ball struck bodies in front of goal, and the USA preserved the clean sheet.

World Cup impact of Christian Pulisic absence
Christian Pulisic’s injury dominated pre-match discussion, with attention on who might cover the creative role. Pepi earned the starting place in the front line, and the United States attack still functioned smoothly. The team rarely appeared unsettled, even without the influence of one of their most experienced attacking players.
Dest led all players for shots, finishing with three attempts, including one saved right on half-time. McKennie, Pepi and Balogun each registered two shots as the USA shared the attacking responsibility. While those forwards could not all score, the contribution from Freeman and the pressure that caused Burgess’ own goal secured victory.
The United States leave Seattle with qualification assured and momentum building, having delivered another confident World Cup performance. Australia, by contrast, must quickly regroup before facing Paraguay, knowing only a strong result can keep the campaign going.
