For an athlete accustomed to measuring his life in seconds, metres and finishing lines, the past 14 months offered Avinash Sable something far more difficult to measure: uncertainty.
The reigning Asian champion in the 3000m steeplechase has spent much of the last year away from the event that has defined his career. There were no water jumps to clear, no final laps to attack and no finishing-line battles. Instead, there was surgery, rehabilitation, pain, hesitation and, perhaps hardest of all, doubt.
Sable's troubles began at the 2025 Monaco Diamond League, where a fall at the opening water jump ended his race barely a minute after it had begun. What initially appeared to be an unfortunate fall soon revealed itself to be much more serious. An
MRI confirmed an ACL injury, forcing one of India's leading distance runners into a long and unfamiliar battle away from competition.
The timing made the setback even more painful. Sable had returned from the Asian Championships with a gold medal and believed he was in the best physical shape of his career. Monaco was supposed to be the stage where he tested those limits.
Instead, it became the beginning of one of the most difficult chapters of his sporting life.
"If you look at it, the last year has been very difficult for me. I think it had been a long time since I had been away from steeplechase. Since 2017, this was the first time that I had gone such a long period without competing in any competition.
Even during COVID, I got an opportunity to compete. But the period after my ACL surgery was very difficult for me. "
That admission captures the enormity of what followed. Sable eventually underwent surgery at the end of July, but recovery did not follow the straightforward path he had hoped for. He began jogging in December and initially believed he was progressing well. By March and April, his attention had already turned towards preparing for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Then came another obstacle. As he increased the intensity of his training, adding speed work, hurdle drills and jumping, pain developed in his shin. The injury forced him back into rehabilitation and once again placed his return in doubt.
May, he says, was particularly difficult. "At that point, I felt that I might not be able to return to sport. It was already May, the Commonwealth Games were approaching, and I wasn't sure how I would make it back. I had lost confidence in myself and didn't know how I was going to recover. "
For an athlete who had already reached two Olympic finals, won an Asian Games gold medal and produced some of the most memorable performances in Indian steeplechase, the fear was not merely about missing another competition.
It was about whether his body would allow him to become that athlete again.
The hurdles, once a familiar part of his craft, suddenly became a source of apprehension. Running itself was possible, but confidence had disappeared.
"When I came to SAI Bengaluru in June, I was very confused. I didn't know how I was going to recover. I was injured, I couldn't train properly, and I wasn't fit. I could run, but I was afraid of the hurdles. I was scared that I wouldn't be able to clear them properly. "
And then came the thought no champion wants to entertain.
"At one point, I even thought that I might not be able to compete at the Asian Games. "
That sentence perhaps says more about Sable's journey than any medal or record could. There was a time when the biggest questions surrounding him were how fast he could run and how high he could take Indian athletics. Suddenly, the question was whether he would be able to return at all.
Yet his comeback was not built in one dramatic moment. It was constructed gradually, day after day, session after session, with the support of the Sports Authority of India centre in Bengaluru and the athletics federation.
Sable returned to SAI Bengaluru immediately after surgery, when even walking was difficult. The same place would become the backdrop to his painstaking rehabilitation and eventual return to serious training.
"I believe SAI Bengaluru has played a huge role in my comeback journey. I came to SAI Bengaluru the day after my surgery, at a time when I couldn't even walk properly, and I stayed there throughout my recovery. From there, I gradually worked towards becoming ready for competition.
I received a lot of support from SAI Bengaluru and the Federation, and I would like to thank them for giving me the time and opportunity to recover properly. "
By June, the uncertainty had begun to give way to progress. Three months of training June, July and August brought back something that had been missing for much of the year: belief.
"My injury was so bad that I couldn't train. I could only do rehabilitation. Thankfully, my injury improved in June, and I was able to return to training. I trained for three months June, July and August and had some very good training sessions. Now, I feel that I can repeat the kind of training I was doing previously because my sessions have been going really well. "
His competitive return, however, has been deliberately gradual.
Sable made his comeback in Belgium in the 5000m, clocking 13:45.52. The result itself may not command headlines, but reducing this comeback to a finishing position would miss the larger story.
For Sable, simply being back in competition carries a significance far greater than the stopwatch.
After 14 months without racing, the next task is to rediscover the rhythm, confidence and aggression required for the 3000m steeplechase. That process continues at the Indian Athletics Series in New Delhi next week, where he is set to compete again.
The Asian Games remain the bigger destination. At the previous edition, Sable won gold in the 3000m steeplechase and silver in the 5000m. This time, he returns not as an athlete chasing his first major breakthrough, but as a defending champion attempting to prove that an injury can interrupt a career without defining it.
"I competed in my first race on 1st August, and now I am preparing to compete again on 10 September in Delhi. These 14 months have been extremely difficult for me. I have been without competition for 14 months, and I am really looking forward to getting back on the track. "
There is no grand promise in Sable's words. He does not speak as though the old version of himself will simply reappear the moment he steps onto the track. Instead, there is a more measured ambition to rebuild confidence first, and performance with it.
"I want to build my confidence again. I want to show my country and all the people who have supported me throughout this journey that I can do well. "
That may be the most important race Sable is running now. Not against the clock. Not against his rivals. Not even against the version of himself that once stood on an Asian Games podium.
He is racing against the doubts that accumulated during 14 months of injury and uncertainty.
The fall in Monaco took him away from the track. The ACL surgery forced him to start again. The pain in his shin threatened to prolong the nightmare. There were moments when even the Asian Games seemed beyond reach.
But Sable kept returning. And now, with the steeplechase back in sight, the champion is once again preparing to confront the hurdles.
"I would like to thank everyone who stood by me. They gave me the opportunity to come back to this track, and now I will try to give my best. "
For Avinash Sable, that is enough. After everything he has endured, the comeback itself is already a victory. The Asian Games will decide what comes next.
