Eddie Howe was reminded of Dan Burn's memorable goal in the EFL Cup final against Liverpool when Burn scored a remarkable header in Newcastle United's 2-0 Champions League victory over Athletic Bilbao. The centre-back connected with Kieran Trippier's deep free-kick, sending a powerful header past Unai Simon to give Newcastle an early lead at St. James' Park.
Joelinton extended the advantage by heading in Harvey Barnes' cross early in the second half, helping Newcastle secure their third win in four league matches. This marked Burn's second Champions League goal, both scored with his head. He joins Alan Shearer and Faustino Asprilla as the only Newcastle players to score multiple headers in this competition.
Newcastle has now achieved three consecutive
Champions League victories, contrasting with their domestic form. They recently suffered a 3-1 defeat at West Ham, leaving them 13th in the Premier League standings. Howe expressed satisfaction with the win, stating it was a crucial response to their previous loss. "I don't think it was us at our best, but we're in a good position now," he said.
Burn's success is closely linked to Trippier, who has assisted 55% of Burn's goals for Newcastle, all headers. Trippier has now provided nine assists in the Champions League, ranking third among English defenders behind Ashley Cole and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Reflecting on Burn's performance, Howe noted its similarity to the cup final goal against Liverpool.

Joelinton has found the net twice in his last four starts for Newcastle in Europe's top competition after scoring just once in his first 12 major European tournament starts. Howe emphasized the need for more goals from midfielders and attackers. "Joelinton needs to score," he stated. "We've worked on him arriving late in the box and using his strength from aerial crosses. "
Howe also highlighted that consistency is key across all competitions as they prepare for their next Champions League match away at Marseille. He acknowledged that playing away will be challenging but stressed the importance of maintaining performance levels wherever they play.
