Morgan Rogers credited Unai Emery's guidance after his two goals led Aston Villa to a 2-1 victory over Leeds United on Sunday. Lukas Nmecha initially put Leeds ahead at Elland Road, but Rogers equalised
with a clever flick from Donyell Malen's cross early in the second half. Later, he scored a stunning free-kick in the 75th minute, securing Villa's comeback and moving them to fourth in the Premier League.
Rogers' performance was notable as he became only the second Villa player to score twice at Elland Road in the Premier League since Gareth Southgate in January 2000. He also topped his team in shots, chances created, successful dribbles, and total duels during the match. Reflecting on his performance, Rogers shared that Emery often encourages him to occupy more advanced positions on the field.
Discussing his free-kick goal, Rogers said, "I call it the Emi Buendia. He did it in the last game before the break. It's something I've been practising. " He noted that once Buendia left the pitch, he saw no one else who practised free-kicks as much, so he took the opportunity himself. His goal demonstrated his ability to execute under pressure.
Since debuting in the Premier League, only Cole Palmer and Bukayo Saka have contributed to more goals among players aged 23 or younger than Rogers. With 14 goals and 13 assists, he has been instrumental for Villa. His adaptability across various positions makes him a valuable asset for Emery's tactical plans.
Unai Emery praised Rogers' performance, stating: "He was playing fantastic. Today scoring his goal was brilliant. " Emery aims to utilise Rogers' strengths by positioning him on the left, centrally, and as a striker. This flexibility allows Rogers to thrive within different tactical setups while maintaining competitiveness.
The match marked Leeds United's third consecutive defeat under Daniel Farke. Despite leading at halftime, they failed to secure points against Villa. Farke acknowledged their dominance during parts of the game but expressed disappointment over not capitalising on their lead.
Leeds United's Struggles Continue
This loss added to Leeds' struggles this season as they have now dropped eight points from winning positions in the Premier League. Only Newcastle United and Brentford have lost more points from similar situations. Sunday's defeat was just their fourth home loss after leading at halftime since joining the Premier League.

Farke reflected on their performance: "Performance-wise, we've turned back to what we want to be. " He recognised their dominance against a strong opponent but admitted they are not yet at their best. The team remains focused on improvement despite recent setbacks.
Aston Villa's victory highlighted Morgan Rogers' growing influence under Unai Emery's management. His ability to adapt and deliver crucial goals underscores his importance to Villa's ambitions this season.
