India is set to host the Commonwealth Games again in 2030 in Ahmedabad, which will celebrate the centenary of the Commonwealth Games.
This upcoming event is expected to further highlight India's continuing
growth in international sports and infrastructure readiness for hosting large multi-sport events. This is the 2nd time India is hosting this sporting event, the first being a decade and a half ago.
When did India last host Commonwealth Games?
India last hosted the Commonwealth Games in the year 2010. The event was held in Delhi, marking the first time India hosted the Commonwealth Games and only the second time the Games were held in Asia. The XIX Commonwealth Games took place from October 3 to October 14, 2010, featuring athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations and territories competing in 17 sports.
How did India perform in it?
The 2010 Games were a major milestone for India, showcasing the country's capability for hosting large-scale international multi-sport events and resulted in a strong medal performance for the Indian contingent, particularly in sports like wrestling, shooting, boxing, and weightlifting.
India's medal tally at the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi was a total of 101 medals, which was the country's highest-ever medal haul at the Games. This comprised:
38 Gold medals
27 Silver medals
36 Bronze medals
This outstanding performance placed India second in the overall medal table, behind Australia. Indian athletes excelled particularly in shooting, which contributed 30 medals including 14 golds. Wrestling also saw a strong Indian showing with 19 out of 21 wrestlers winning medals, including 10 golds.
