As the IPL 2026 season reaches its mid-phase, all eyes remain on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) icon MS Dhoni as they take on Mumbai Indians on Thursday (April 23).
The 44-year-old veteran has missed the opening six matches due to a calf strain suffered during pre-season training. CSK initially announced a two-week recovery period, but the layoff has extended longer than expected, sparking widespread concern among fans.
Dhoni, who has been a cornerstone of CSK's success with his finishing prowess and leadership, underwent rehabilitation while the team managed without him. Sanju Samson has primarily handled wicket-keeping duties in his absence. Recent reports indicate progress: Dhoni has been spotted batting in the nets and has started travelling with the squad,
including trips to Hyderabad and now Mumbai.
MS Dhoni Injury Update
CSK batting coach Michael Hussey provided a cautious yet optimistic update: "He's progressing nicely with his rehab, and I'm happy with how he's batting. He just needs to build confidence in his running and improve his speed. I don't know when he'll play, but I'm hoping it's sooner rather than later.
IPL 2026: Will MS Dhoni play against MI?
The high-voltage clash against Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium on April 23 has emerged as a potential return date in several reports. Dhoni has reportedly been doing wicket-keeping drills in Mumbai practice sessions, raising hopes among the yellow army. Some insiders suggest the MI game could mark his comeback, while others note that a final fitness call is still pending. No official confirmation has come from CSK or head coach Stephen Fleming yet.
But Dhoni's return date is likely to be deferred as the Wankhede match may well be too early for him. As per the latest understandings, the CSK star may return to action against Gujarat Titans on April 26 at Chepauk.
