Mason Howell is stepping into the Masters with a storyline many young golfers dream about. The 18-year-old U.S. Amateur champion will open his first Masters on 11 April alongside defending champion Rory McIlroy, continuing the event's tradition of pairing the reigning amateur winner with the previous year's champion for the first two rounds.
The connection between McIlroy and Howell began long before this week at Augusta National. When Howell was 9, McIlroy tossed a ball to the youngster at the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. Howell still keeps that ball, stamped with "RORS", in his golf bag and joked about actually using it at Augusta.
Masters debut, Rory McIlroy link and childhood idol
"I'm not," Howell said, laughing. "But that would be a power move. " The teenager openly
describes McIlroy as an "idol. " McIlroy relates to that feeling, remembering his own admiration for Tom Watson, a two-time Masters champion, with whom McIlroy played the first two rounds of the 2010 U.S. Open.
Reflecting on the sport's long careers and overlapping eras, McIlroy said: "I think that's the incredible thing about our game is," McIlroy said, "because our careers are long, so many generations overlap. " Howell now joins that chain of connections as he prepares for one of the most watched tournaments in golf.
Masters experience, Crow's Nest stay and amateur traditions at the Masters
The lead-up to Howell's Masters debut has included several traditions reserved for amateurs. On 8 April, Howell played a practice round with Jacob Bridgeman, who already has a PGA Tour win this season. Later that evening, Howell joined an exclusive dinner for amateurs in the field, before heading to the storied Crow's Nest, the attic accommodation above the Augusta National clubhouse reserved for amateurs.
Howell, a high school senior, is also enjoying a lighter side benefit: missing classwork while living out a childhood dream. "Yeah, it's kind of a lot to handle," Howell said with a smile. "It's a long week. " Whatever the final scorecard shows, the structure of Masters week already guarantees a set of memories that Howell is unlikely to forget.
Masters stage, early career and major championship history
This is not Howell's first taste of elite competition. Howell played in the U.S. Open in 2023, though missed the cut, and represented the United States at both the Walker Cup and Eisenhower Trophy. At the Olympic Club, Howell became the third-youngest winner of the U.S. Amateur, securing the title by beating Jackson Herrington 7 & 6 in the final.
The Masters has a history of welcoming very young competitors. Guan Tianlang remains the youngest player to appear at Augusta National, having qualified aged 14 in 2013 through the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship. Tiger Woods still holds the record as the youngest Masters winner, claiming the title by 12 shots in 1997 at the age of 21, a landmark victory that changed his career.
Masters nerves, hometown backing and guidance from Harris English
Howell lives in Thomasville, Georgia, a few hours south of Augusta National near the Florida border, and will play for the University of Georgia from the coming autumn. This local link has brought strong backing, from friends and family who secured rare Masters badges to strangers who recognise Howell's Georgia roots and shout "Go 'Dawgs!" as Howell moves around the course.
Fellow Georgian Harris English has watched Howell grow up at Glen Arven Country Club, where both players learned the game before representing the University of Georgia. "I've known Mason for a long time now," said English, who tied for 12th at the Masters in 2023 in his sixth appearance. "I can't imagine what he's going through at 18 years old and playing in the Masters for the first time. "
English has offered practical advice to help Howell balance awe with performance. "Told him take it all in but manage your time well. Don't get lost in everything. This is just another golf tournament," English said. "He has played in a lot of golf tournaments and he's won a lot of big golf tournaments. Treat it as much like that as you possibly can. "
As Howell prepares to walk the first fairway with McIlroy, the week blends childhood memories, local pride and long-standing Masters traditions. The combination of early success, guidance from experienced professionals and strong support from Georgia fans sets a clear stage. Howell's results at Augusta National will join an already busy early career, whether or not the teenager makes the weekend cut.
