India captain Shubman Gill has opened up after yet another run-out involvement with Rohit Sharma in the first ODI between India and Afghanistan on Saturday (June 13).
Shubman Gill played a magnificent knock of 84 runs off just 66 deliveries, as India comfortably beat the Afghans by 7 wickets in Dharamshala.
In a rain-curtailed match, India were chasing 195 runs in 25 overs, and Shubman Gill opened with Rohit Sharma. The veteran made a good start with the bat, but his knock was cut short by an unfortunate run out yet again.
Rohit nudged the ball towards mid-on and called for a quick single. Gill, however, immediately shouted "no" multiple times while staying in his crease. By then, Rohit had committed halfway down the pitch. He turned back desperately,
but Rashid Khan's throw was taken cleanly by Rahmanullah Gurbaz and he dislodged the stumps before Rohit could get home.
After the match, Gill was asked about the run out, and the India captain confirmed that Rohit Sharma was not angry.
"He saw the replays and said it's fine, he was run out in the last match too," Gill said at the post-match presentation.
The incident echoed a familiar pattern of miscommunication between the duo. Rohit appeared visibly frustrated as he walked off, though India still chased the revised target comfortably with Gill unbeaten on 47.
This wasn't the first time. In the 1st T20I vs Afghanistan in Mohali (January 2024), a similar disaster unfolded on just the second ball of India's chase. Rohit smashed the ball to mid-off and set off aggressively for a single. Gill, ball-watching at the non-striker's end, didn't respond. Both ended up at the same end, and Rohit was run out for a duck. He reacted with rare anger, shouting at Gill with animated gestures while returning to the pavilion.
