Jason Gillespie, the former Australian fast bowler turned coach, has laid bare the frustrations that drove him to abandon his post as Pakistan's men's Test head coach after a mere eight months in the role.
Appointed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in April 2024, Gillespie stepped down following the team's Test series in South Africa, citing a toxic mix of poor communication, unilateral decisions, and personal humiliation that eroded his authority as the team's leader.
In a revealing Q&A session on X (formerly Twitter), where he first praised the Pakistan Super League as "It's a great competition," Gillespie opened up when pressed on his sudden departure from Pakistan cricket.
The tipping point, he explained, was the PCB's abrupt sacking of
his senior assistant coach, Tim Nielsen, without any prior consultation.
"I was coaching the Pakistan Test side. The PCB sacked our senior assistant coach with ZERO communication with me about it- as head coach I found this situation completely unacceptable. There were a number of other issues which left me completely humiliated. " Gillespie said.
This incident, coupled with ongoing disputes over selection powers and coaching staff stability, shattered what trust remained in his relationship with the board. Gillespie had entered the job aiming to steady a Pakistan red-ball side plagued by inconsistency, but off-field politics overshadowed his efforts.
On the pitch, results painted a picture of promise amid pitfalls. His tenure kicked off disastrously with a 2-0 home series whitewash by Bangladesh in September 2024-a shocking outcome on familiar turf that laid bare deep-rooted problems in batting resilience and team unity.
Yet, redemption followed in October, as Pakistan clawed back from a 1-0 deficit to claim a hard-fought 2-1 victory over England in a three-match home series. Thriving on spin-dominated pitches, the wins highlighted Gillespie's tactical acumen and the squad's potential under pressure, injecting rare optimism into Pakistan's Test campaign.
