In the Indian chase, Rohit Sharma departed for a duck but Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli took over. Kohli looked particularly positive, using his trademark flicks and drives to find boundaries. He struck two fours in the ninth over against Blair Tickner before producing an elegant lofted drive over extra cover against Jamieson in the 11th over. The boundary also brought up the 50-run partnership between the two Indian batters. Gill, meanwhile, played a more cautious innings, negotiating the movement and bounce offered by the New Zealand pacers.
At the time rain stopped play, Gill was unbeaten on 17 off 30 balls, while Kohli was batting on 25 off 25 deliveries. India had reached 54/1 in 10.5 overs, with 132 runs still required from 49.1 overs.
The rain interruption came shortly after India crossed the 50-run mark, with the visitors having recovered well from Rohit's early dismissal
