Conor Coady has left Wrexham after just five months and joined Charlton Athletic on loan for the rest of the season, with the former England international switching from a promotion-chasing Championship side to a team fighting to stay in the division.
Charlton are 19th in the Championship table, three points above the relegation places, and Coady could make a first appearance for the London club against former side Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, adding extra interest to a key fixture.

Coady joined Wrexham from Leicester City in August, but the defender slipped out of Phil Parkinson's preferred starting XI after
only five Championship matches, with a 3-1 defeat to QPR on September 13 marking the most recent league appearance for the Racecourse Ground side.
Before moving to Leicester and then Wrexham, Coady captained Wolves to consecutive seventh-place finishes in the Premier League during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, and the 32-year-old now leaves a Wrexham squad that could achieve a fourth straight promotion, rising from non-league level to the Premier League.
| Club | Period | Key detail |
|---|---|---|
| Wolves | 2018-19, 2019-20 | Captain, finished seventh both seasons |
| Leicester City | Before August 2025 | Joined Wrexham from Leicester |
| Wrexham | August 2025-January 2026 | Lost starting place after five league games |
| Charlton Athletic | January 2026 onwards | Loan for remainder of season |
Charlton manager Nathan Jones highlighted why Coady was targeted, saying: "We're delighted to add Conor. He is a player of immense experience and someone who has played at the highest level and played for his country. His leadership and his qualities are something we feel we needed at this time. At this point, we really felt we could utilise his leadership going into the last 18 games. "
The move gives Charlton an experienced defender for a tense run-in, while Coady gains regular playing prospects again after limited minutes at Wrexham, with both clubs hoping the loan works across a survival battle on one side and a continued promotion challenge on the other.
