Kolkata Knight Riders endured a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, finishing seventh in the league standings and missing out on a playoff berth despite making significant investments at the auction. Several high-profile players failed to deliver, with Cameron Green emerging as a major disappointment after scoring 322 runs and claiming just seven wickets in 14 matches. Ramandeep Singh and captain Ajinkya Rahane also struggled to meet expectations, particularly in providing finishing firepower and maintaining scoring momentum.
Matheesha Pathirana proved to be another expensive setback for the franchise. Signed for ₹18 crore, the Sri Lankan pacer managed to feature in just one match before a hamstring injury ended his campaign after eight deliveries.
Overall, injuries, inconsistent performances and questionable team combinations contributed to KKR's underwhelming season. Here are some of the players who turned out to be major disappointments for Kolkata.
IPL 2026: Top 4 Underperformers For KKR
Rinku Singh
Kolkata Knight Riders may have missed an opportunity to maximise Rinku Singh's contribution during IPL 2026 by not promoting him higher in the batting lineup. Although the left-handed batter endured a quiet beginning to the tournament, he gradually regained his rhythm and emerged as a key contributor to KKR's batting efforts.
Across 14 appearances, he accumulated 295 runs at an impressive strike rate of 148.99. KKR struggled to maintain consistency with the bat throughout much of the season, making Rinku's role in the middle order particularly significant.
Given his ability to adapt to different match situations and batting positions, the franchise could have considered moving him up the order more frequently. A promotion would potentially have allowed him to face more deliveries, influence the innings for longer periods, and deliver an even greater contribution to the team's batting performances.
Tim Seifert
Kolkata Knight Riders endured a disappointing run during the powerplay phase of IPL 2026, largely due to their inability to settle on a reliable opening combination. Ajinkya Rahane featured alongside several partners during the campaign, while the franchise also continued to include Rovman Powell as its fourth overseas player for much of the competition.
However, KKR failed to extract the best out of Powell, with his contributions with both bat and ball remaining limited. Another questionable selection decision involved their opening combination. Finn Allen and Tim Seifert possess the attacking instincts to form a formidable partnership at the top of the order, but KKR did not explore this possibility consistently.
Instead, the franchise largely preferred pairing Allen with Rahane. Giving Seifert an extended opportunity at the top could have provided the team with greater firepower during the initial overs and potentially transformed its powerplay performances.
Cameroon Green
The Australian all-rounder proved to be another major disappointment in Kolkata Knight Riders' underwhelming IPL 2026 campaign. Acquired for a staggering ₹25 crore, Green arrived as the franchise's headline signing, with expectations of strengthening the middle order while offering valuable support with his pace bowling.
However, his performances fell well short of what KKR had anticipated. Despite the enormous investment, Green struggled to deliver consistent contributions with the bat and ball, prompting frustrated supporters to label him the "25 Crore Tourist" on social media.
He managed 322 runs in 14 appearances at an average of 30.20, numbers that failed to reflect the impact expected from such an expensive acquisition. His returns with the ball were equally disappointing, as he finished the campaign with only seven wickets.
Moreover, his limited bowling involvement prevented KKR from fully benefiting from his all-round capabilities. His inability to make a significant impact in either department left the franchise with selection challenges and disrupted the overall balance of the playing XI.
Matheesha Pathirana
Matheesha Pathirana turned out to be one of Kolkata Knight Riders' most disappointing investments in IPL 2026 when it comes to the bowling department. Purchased for a whopping ₹18 crore at the mega-auction, the Sri Lankan pacer was expected to strengthen KKR's death-over bowling with his trademark sling-arm action and pinpoint yorkers.
However, persistent injury problems derailed his campaign before it could properly begin. After missing the first half of the tournament while recovering from an ankle injury, Pathirana made his debut against Gujarat Titans in May. Unfortunately, he suffered a hamstring injury after bowling just eight deliveries, ending his campaign prematurely.
