The race for the final IPL 2026 playoff spot remains wide open after Rajasthan Royals defeated Lucknow Super Giants in Jaipur on Tuesday. While Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans have already secured qualification, five teams are still mathematically in contention for the fourth and final berth.
Rajasthan's victory takes them to 14 points and puts them in the strongest position heading into the final round of league fixtures. However, Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals are all still alive, ensuring the battle will go down to the last day of the league stage.
Here's how the playoff equation stands for each team.
IPL Playoff Scenarios after RR vs LSG
Rajasthan Royals (14 points)
Rajasthan remain the only side with
complete control over their destiny.
The Royals face Mumbai Indians in their final league match on May 24. A victory would take them to 16 points and guarantee qualification regardless of results elsewhere.
Even if they lose, RR could still sneak through, provided Lucknow Super Giants beat Punjab Kings and the Royals maintain a superior net run rate over the chasing pack.
In simple terms, win and they are through.
Punjab Kings (13 points)
Punjab's qualification hopes are no longer in their own hands.
Shreyas Iyer's side must defeat Lucknow Super Giants in their final match and hope Mumbai Indians beat Rajasthan Royals. A victory would move PBKS to 15 points, which could be enough if RR fail to reach 16.
Net run rate could become decisive if Kolkata Knight Riders also finish on 15 points by winning their remaining matches.
Chennai Super Kings (12 points)
CSK need a near-perfect chain of results to stay alive.
First, they must beat Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. Then they need Mumbai Indians to defeat both Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders, while Lucknow Super Giants must beat Punjab Kings.
If those results fall into place, Chennai would enter a net run rate battle against Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals for the final spot.
Their path remains one of the most complicated among the contenders.
Kolkata Knight Riders (11 points)
KKR face a virtual knockout game against Mumbai Indians before taking on Delhi Capitals in their final fixture.
Ajinkya Rahane's side must win both matches to reach 15 points. Even then, they require Mumbai Indians to beat Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants to defeat Punjab Kings.
Should those results materialise, Kolkata would likely enter a three-way net run rate battle involving Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.
Any defeat from here would eliminate them.
Delhi Capitals (12 points)
Delhi Capitals have just one game remaining but still have a mathematical chance.
Axar Patel's team must beat Kolkata Knight Riders and then hope Mumbai Indians defeat Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants overcome Punjab Kings.
If those results occur, DC would finish on 14 points and rely on net run rate to stay ahead of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals.
Current outlook to IPL 2026 Playoffs
Among the five contenders, Rajasthan Royals hold the strongest hand because qualification is entirely dependent on their own result against Mumbai Indians. Punjab Kings remain well placed but require help from elsewhere, while CSK, KKR and DC all need multiple results to go their way alongside strong finishes in their own matches.
With RR vs MI and DC vs KKR scheduled on the final day of the league stage, the identity of the fourth playoff team is likely to be decided only in the closing hours of IPL 2026.
