Ranchi, May 22: The National Senior Athletics Federation Competition 2026 begins in Ranchi on Thursday with India's top track and field stars fighting for qualification spots for the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. The four-day competition at Birsa Munda Stadium will serve as the final selection trial for the Commonwealth Games, making it one of the most important domestic athletics events of the year.
The competition will also double as the selection trials for the inaugural Asian U23 Championships, scheduled to be held in China from July 9 to 12. With Glasgow organisers reducing the athletics quota for the Commonwealth Games, every performance in Ranchi could directly influence India's final contingent for the multi-sport event.

Top Indian Stars Set To Compete
Several leading Indian athletes are expected to compete in Ranchi despite the absence of some of the country's biggest names. Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar returns to national competition after recovering from injury and will be among the headline attractions. Tejaswin Shankar, Sachin Yadav, Sarvesh Kushare, Vishal TK, Tejas Shirse and Tajinderpal Singh Toor are also expected to be in action during the meet.
Sprint sensation Animesh Kujur will remain one of the biggest athletes to watch closely in Ranchi. The national record holder in the men's 100m recently clocked 10.18 seconds and now needs to better the Commonwealth Games qualification standard of 10.16 seconds to strengthen his case for Glasgow selection. The Ranchi meet could therefore become a defining competition in his rapidly rising career.
Neeraj Chopra, Avinash Sable Among Big Absentees
The Federation Cup, however, will miss several established Indian stars. Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra will not compete as he continues rehabilitation for a back injury before heading to Switzerland for an extended training camp. National record holder Avinash Sable also remains unavailable after recovering from ACL surgery following the injury he sustained during the Monaco Diamond League last year.
Asian medallist Parul Chaudhary, national record holder Gulveer Singh, women's hurdles star Jyothi Yarraji and heptathlete Nandini Agasara are among the other notable absentees from the competition. Gulveer is currently training in the United States as part of his long-term preparation for the Commonwealth Games and other international events.
Glasgow Qualification Battle Intensifies
This year's Federation Cup carries additional significance because the Athletics Federation of India has introduced strict qualification conditions ahead of Glasgow 2026. India had sent 37 athletes to the previous Commonwealth Games edition in Birmingham, but the Glasgow organisers have capped participation at 32 athletes, including only 16 women competitors.
That reduction means athletes will face enormous pressure to produce strong performances in Ranchi. Meeting qualification standards alone may not guarantee selection, as consistency and competitiveness will also remain key factors in the final squad selection process.
SRY Gene Testing Introduced at National Level
The meet will also attract attention because of the implementation of SRY Gene Testing protocols under World Athletics guidelines. The tests are being introduced at the national level for the first time to ensure compliance with eligibility norms in women's events.
According to reports, the testing process will involve cheek swabs or blood samples conducted under approved procedures during the competition.
India's Strong CWG Legacy in Athletics
India enjoyed a successful athletics campaign at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, winning eight medals including a historic gold medal in men's triple jump through Eldhose Paul. Avinash Sable had also secured a silver medal in the men's 3000m steeplechase, while Neeraj Chopra missed the Games because of injury.
The Federation Cup therefore becomes an important stepping stone as India begins shaping its athletics squad for Glasgow 2026.
With qualification spots, national pride and international ambitions all at stake, the Federation Cup 2026 promises to be a crucial event for Indian athletics. Over the next four days, Ranchi could shape India's track and field squad for Glasgow and determine which athletes carry the country's hopes into one of the biggest sporting events of the year.
