Belgium's hopes of securing a place in the 2026 World Cup were dashed after a 1-1 draw with Kazakhstan in Astana. Despite dominating possession, Belgium could not capitalise on their chances. Kazakhstan's
goalkeeper, Temirlan Anarbekov, was instrumental in keeping the score level, making eight crucial saves throughout the match.
Kazakhstan took an early lead when Dastan Satpaev scored in the ninth minute. Matz Sels managed to deflect Galymzhan Kenzhebek's curling shot but couldn't stop Satpaev's subsequent effort. Anarbekov then thwarted attempts from Hans Vanaken and Leandro Trossard, maintaining Kazakhstan's advantage until halftime.
Belgium equalised shortly after the break through Vanaken, who headed home Timothy Castagne's cross. Anarbekov continued his impressive performance by denying Vanaken twice more after the hour mark. The situation worsened for Kazakhstan when Islam Chesnokov received a red card for a foul on Jeremy Doku.
Despite being down to ten men, Kazakhstan held firm. Doku came close to scoring again but missed the target. Anarbekov made another crucial save against Nicolas Raskin, ensuring Kazakhstan secured a valuable point. Belgium had 77.2% possession and created 20 shots, resulting in an expected goals (xG) tally of 2.5 compared to Kazakhstan’s 0.34 from nine attempts.
Impact of De Bruyne's Absence
Belgium played without their top scorer Kevin De Bruyne, who is recovering from hamstring surgery. His absence was felt as Belgium struggled to convert their chances into goals. Captain Vanaken tried to lead by example, generating 1.27 xG himself and taking several shots at goal.
Doku was also influential, creating eight chances and winning nine out of 14 duels during the game. Despite these efforts, Belgium remains unbeaten in their last 26 World Cup qualifiers but must win their final match against Liechtenstein to secure qualification for next year's tournament.

The draw leaves Belgium needing a victory against Liechtenstein to ensure their spot in the upcoming World Cup tournament. The team will need to improve their finishing if they are to succeed without De Bruyne leading their attack.
