Just when Team India's focus was expected to shift firmly towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, reports of internal unease have sparked fresh debate. According to a report by The Times of India, some senior Indian players have reportedly approached the BCCI directly to seek clarity about their future roles in the ODI setup, without first consulting head coach Gautam Gambhir.
The development has naturally raised a big question among fans: Is there a growing rift inside the Indian dressing room, or is this simply part of a transition phase as India prepares for the next World Cup cycle?
Why Are Questions Being Raised?
India returns to ODI cricket this week against Afghanistan after nearly six months, with attention firmly on veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. While Kohli continues
to be in excellent form, Rohit's future has become a major talking point due to recent fitness concerns and a modest run in India's last ODI series.
A BCCI source told The Times of India, "With such big players in the team, Gill needs to have a stronger say in the dressing room. " The source also added that Gambhir has not been as deeply involved in ODI planning as he has been in Tests and T20Is.
The report suggests that communication regarding future roles may not have been clear enough, prompting some senior players to seek answers directly from the board.
Gambhir, Gill and the Challenge Ahead
The upcoming months will be crucial for both Gautam Gambhir and ODI captain Shubman Gill. According to the same BCCI source, "It is important that the senior players, who have served India with distinction for so many years, are conveyed what role the team expects them to play and the plan for the build-up over the next 16 months. "
While there is no public evidence of a dressing-room split, the situation highlights the delicate balance between experienced stars and a management team trying to build towards the next World Cup.
Not the First Time Indian Cricket Has Faced Such Questions
Indian cricket has witnessed similar controversies before. During Mahendra Singh Dhoni's captaincy, reports of divisions between senior and younger players occasionally surfaced, particularly around the transition period following the retirements of several veterans. While most of those concerns eventually faded as results improved, they showed how leadership changes can create uncertainty within a team.
For now, India's ODI camp faces a similar test: managing expectations, defining roles, and ensuring that communication remains clear as the countdown to the 2027 World Cup begins. The real challenge for Team India may not be talent, but keeping everyone moving in the same direction.
