Roma and Atalanta shared the points in a 1-1 Serie A draw, a result that offers limited help to either side’s European ambitions, while giving Juventus a chance to extend the advantage in the Champions League race as the Turin club can move five points clear of Roma by beating Bologna.
The stalemate keeps Roma in sixth place, level on points with fifth-placed Como, who lost 2-1 to Sassuolo earlier on 18 April, while Atalanta stay seventh, four points behind Roma, meaning both clubs lose ground in the chase for continental qualification heading into the final stretch.
The game’s early pattern suggested caution from both sides, yet Atalanta struck first when Marten de Roon threaded a pass through Roma’s defence and Nikola Krstovic surged clear before
beating Mile Svilar with a firm finish on 12 minutes, punishing Roma’s slow start at Stadio Olimpico.
Roma responded with sustained pressure before half-time, as Donyell Malen twice tested Marco Carnesecchi, who produced one sharp reaction save from close range and another strong stop soon after, but the hosts finally levelled in the final minute of the opening period when Devyne Rensch headed down and Mario Hermoso volleyed high into the net.
After the interval Roma controlled territory and possession, pushing Atalanta deeper, with Carnesecchi again crucial as the goalkeeper blocked efforts from Stephan El Shaarawy and Malen at the near post, while substitute Lorenzo Venturino directed a close-range header over the bar as Roma chased a decisive second goal.
The closest Roma came to claiming victory arrived on 75 minutes, when Hermoso met a cross with a looping header that beat Carnesecchi but clipped the top of the crossbar, leaving the defender and team-mates frustrated as two potentially important points slipped away in front of the home support.

The build-up to the Roma vs Atalanta clash in Serie A had been shaped by tension off the pitch, with Roma senior advisor Claudio Ranieri reportedly clashing with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who faced the club managed for a highly successful nine-year spell, adding extra narrative around an already important fixture.
Historically, Roma once enjoyed a strong home record against Atalanta in Serie A, winning eight consecutive matches at Stadio Olimpico, but this draw means the capital club now have only one victory from their last 12 home league meetings with the Bergamo side, with six draws and five defeats across that period.
The result does at least halt a negative trend for Roma, who avoid a fifth successive home Serie A defeat against Atalanta, something the club have not experienced against a single opponent in the league since suffering five straight home losses to AC Milan between 1988 and 1990, underlining recent struggles in this fixture.
Attacking quality was limited despite Roma’s territorial dominance, reflected in the underlying numbers, as Roma attempted 19 shots yet generated only 0.9 expected goals, while Atalanta recorded eight efforts worth 0.68 expected goals, highlighting how both defences restricted clear chances in a match whose outcome potentially benefits Juventus most.
The 1-1 draw leaves Roma and Atalanta still firmly involved in the European qualification battle but with reduced margin for error, while Juventus gain a clear opportunity against Bologna to strengthen control of fourth place, as the match in Rome becomes more significant for the standings than for either team’s immediate momentum.
