Virat Kohli has opened up on the growing culture of constant filming around cricketers during the IPL, admitting that being followed by cameras "all the time" has become uncomfortable and affects the way players prepare.
Speaking on a podcast released by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kohli said modern IPL coverage and social media content creation have reached a point where players often struggle to find privacy even during practice sessions or personal conversations.
Virat Kohli says cameras are everywhere during IPL
Kohli acknowledged that social media and fan engagement are now major parts of franchise cricket, but admitted players still need space to work in peace.
"Like social media is a huge part of the commercial representation or the fan engagement for any team, which is understandable,"
Kohli said.
However, the RCB star explained that the nonstop filming environment can become overwhelming.
"Immediately you walk to practice and you have six cameras following, it's not a comfortable feeling at all. "
Kohli added that constant recording changes how players behave at training because every movement gets dissected online.
"As a sportsperson, you need to have the ability and the freedom to work on your game in peace. "
"Everything becomes content"
Kohli suggested the current environment makes it difficult for cricketers to experiment during practice without becoming part of online debate the next day.
"If everything you do is an opportunity to film or display or dissect, then you are not organic. "
The former RCB captain said he often avoids trying new things during practice because clips from net sessions immediately become talking points on social media.
"I'm not going to be able to try to do things at practice which I really want to do, because I know tomorrow if someone films it, there are discussions on my practice sessions. "
Kohli insisted players should only be judged on match performances rather than practice footage.
"You judge me on my performances during the game. During the lead-up, no one has the right to judge me for what I'm doing in terms of preparation. "
Virat Kohli recalls robot interruption during Kane Williamson chat
One of the lighter moments from the conversation came when Kohli described being interrupted by IPL's robot camera while talking to Kane Williamson.
Kohli revealed he eventually asked staff members to move the robot away so he could continue the conversation peacefully.
I was talking to Kane the other day. And there's that robot thing doing this. "
"I told the guy, please take him away. Let me talk in peace. "
The India star also joked about how even casual conversations between players instantly become viral social media moments.
"He's my friend. I've known him since our under-19 days. "
"I can't have a conversation with him without it becoming a moment of 'Kane Mama' and 'King Kohli' meeting. "
Virat Kohli calls for "streamlining"
Kohli clarified that he is not against fan engagement or content creation, but believes there should be clearer boundaries around when and how players are filmed.
"There has to be a bit more streamlining in terms of understanding how much to do, when to do, and is the player okay with being filmed at all times?"
The RCB batter added that modern cricket coverage has crossed into excessive territory.
"This is my honest assessment. It gets too much. "
Why Kohli's comments matter
Kohli's remarks come at a time when IPL franchises are increasingly investing in behind-the-scenes content, training footage, dressing-room clips and player interactions to drive engagement across Instagram, YouTube and streaming platforms.
From practice sessions to recovery drills and candid conversations, players are now constantly part of franchise-generated content ecosystems.
Kohli's comments now raise a larger question around where the balance lies between fan access and player privacy in the social media era.
